[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS TALKS - ECONOMYPresident Christofias has said he exchanged views with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on the chapter of economy, during a new meeting in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations for an agreed settlement to the Cyprus problem which resumed on Wednesday.``The discussion on the issue of economy began. We exchanged our initial views,`` Christofias said in statements on arrival at the Presidential Palace from the UN Protected area, where the talks take place. He added that the two bicommunal working groups on the chapter of economy will meet on Friday to continue discussions on the chapter. The President also said he had ``a private meeting with Talat where we freely exchanged views both on current issues which could be raised by the one or the other side, but also on all aspects of the Cyprus problem.`` Replying to a question whether Talat told him he would prefer to continue the discussion of the issue of Governance, President Christofias said ``Talat can say whatever he likes``. ``I negotiate seriously and I will say what I have to say without many answers to questions which create additional issues for internal consumption and can cause friction among the parties.`` Replying to a question, the President said that the next four scheduled meetings will cover the chapters of economy, EU matters and property, ``and whatever else can be discussed if there is time at these meetings.`` [02] DOWNER LEADERS - MEETINGPresident Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat discussed on Wednesday the issue of economy, in the framework of the ongoing direct negotiating process, aimed at finding a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem. The meeting took place at the residence of UNFICYP Chief of Mission, in the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia and it lasted from 10 oclock in the morning until 5 oclock in the evening.Speaking after the meeting, Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on the Cyprus issue, Alexander Downer said the leaders and officials exchanged opinions on the economy, focused their discussions on the economy. He also said that the representatives and technical officials will be meeting again in the UN protected area in Nicosia on Friday, for further discussions on the issue of the economy. The leaders also had a separate meeting with their representatives on all aspects of the negotiations, he said. [03] SPOKESMAN CYPRUS ISSUE GUARANTEESGovernement Spokesman Stephanos Staphanou said on Wednesday that the position of the Greek Cypriot side on the issue of guarantees for a united Cyprus is crystal clear, namely there is no place for either guarantees or guarantors.Stephanou was replying to a question whether the government is concerned with a possible hardening of the Turkish positions following a resolution adopted by the Plenary of the Cypriot House of Representatives, stating that ``in the united Republic of Cyprus, member state of the EU, there should not be provisions for guarantors or guarantees.`` ``We will see how the Turkish side behaves at the negotiating table. With regard to the resolution of the House of Representatives, our position has been and is clear, as are our views regarding the issue of guarantees, bearing in mind the comminique issued after the meeting of the National Council last September,`` he said. In its communique issued on 18 September, the National Council, top advisory body to the President of the Republic on the handling of the Cyprus question, stressed that ``there can be no guarantors or guarantees for the united Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state.`` [04] MINISTER OF COMMERCE EU TOURISMMinister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides said here Wednesday that after adopting the Lisbon Treaty, the EU can undertake action in order to support tourism, adding that the EU has the competency to support, coordinate and complement moves by the member states.Addressing a public dialogue on A new framework for the tourism policy in the EU, Paschalides as far as Cyprus is concerned, the challenge is to choose the appropriate action that will add value to our tourist product as soon as possible, so that Cyprus, as a tourist destination, will modernize and become more competitive. Tourism, he pointed out, is a wide sector of the economy and affects almost all aspects of life, adding that it also has the potential to develop and provide prospects for employment. He said that the new framework on tourism policy in the EU is the outcome of long consultations at the Commission among member states and those involved in tourism.
