  • [01] CLINTON CYPRUS ISSUE

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the views expressed by US Ambassador in Turkey regarding the presence of Turkish troops in Cyprus reflect Turkish positions, adding that these positions are not adopted by the US government.

Responding to a question by the Democrat Congressman of New York Michael McMahon, during a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Clinton said that in regards to what the ambassador said, its my understanding that he was reflecting the Turkish feeling, not that we endorse it, ascribe to it or support it.

But that what the Turkish position is. Whether you agree with it or not they view a continuing security interest, she added, noting that we are working to support the UN process of mediation to try to get a resolution in Cyprus between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Clinton said that some progress has been made, adding that there have been intensive negotiations over the last six weeks, but a lot more needs to be done.

US Ámbassador in Turkey had said that ``Turkey is a peaceful country, it doesn`t invade its neighbors and it has security concerns in Cyprus.``

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to reach a settlement of the question of Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

    [02] MINISTER TURKEY ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis has protested Turkeys refusal to normalise its relations with the Republic of Cyprus and cooperate with Nicosia, especially as regards illegal immigration issues.

The Cypriot Minister, who participated Thursday in the EU Council of Justice and Home Affairs, submitted a written declaration for paragraph 26 of the draft Council conclusions, in which it is stated that Cyprus expresses its regret for the fact that Turkey has not until now shown the necessary good will that would allow the commencement of a dialogue on issues concerning visa entry.

The declaration also notes that bearing in mind Turkeys refusal to normalise its bilateral relations with the Republic of Cyprus and its refusal to cooperate with Cyprus on all fields, we deem it necessary to ensure that, through effective measures, including a special reference to the Council conclusions, a possible Readmission Agreement with Turkey will be implemented with all EU member states, with no exemption``.

    [03] BAGHDATIS DUBAI TENNIS

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has secured a place in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, after beating Germanys Michael Berrer with 2-0 (7-6 6-1).

Baghdatis, number 37 in world tennis rankings, will face Serbias Novak Djokovic, number 2 in the world, who qualified over Croatias Ivan Ljubicic with 2-1 (2-6 6-4 6-0).
