  • [01] LABOUR MP - TURKEY - EU

British Labour MP Andy Love has said that Turkey should accept the legitimacy of the existing members of the EU as well as basic principles on which the EU is based, if it wants to proceed with the EU course.

``We simply can not tolerate another member of the EU which does not accept the legitimacy of the existing members of the Union. This has to change,`` Love said addressing a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Cypriot Social Democrats Movement EDEK in London.

Pointing out that Britain has perhaps been the best friend of Turkey in Europe and supports its membership to the European Union, Love stressed that ``this can not be gifted away without significant change.``

``We need to do much more in terms of bringing pressure to bear on Turkey. I can not see how Turkey can go forward for membership without accepting the basic principles on which the EU is based,`` he concluded.

    [02] CYPRUS - DAVIS CUP

Cyprus defeated Egypt with 3-2, securing its stay in Davis Cup`s Europe/Africa Zone Group II.

The Cypriot squad secured victory after winning the doubles match on Saturday with 3-0. Yesterday Marcos Baghdatis, 33rd in ATP rankings, defeated Egypt`s Mohamed SAFWAT with 3-0, while Cypriot Christopher Koutrouzas bowed down to Sherif SABRY, shaping the tie`s final score to 3-2.

Cyprus will face Portugal in July for a spot in the final round of Europe/Africa Zone Group II, which leads to Group I.

On the tie with Portugal, Yiannos Hadjigeorgiou, Cyprus` captain, said the encounter will be difficult since Cyprus will play in Portugal on clay courts. ``We will try to do what we did when we faced them (Portugal) in Cyprus. It will not be easy but we will fight to the last match to secure victory,`` he added.
