  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - PAPADOPOULOS` CORPSE

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has expressed relief and satisfaction over the discovery of the corpse of the late President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.

Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA the corpse, found at a cemetery on the outskirts of the capital, Nicosia, after a tip-off late on Monday, had been identified by family members and subjected to DNA tests.

The body was removed on 11 December 2009 from its grave in the cemetery of Deftera community, on the eve of Papadopoulos` first annual memorial service.

Speaking before departing to Athens to inaugurate, with President of the Hellenic Republic Carolos Papoulias, the ``Michalis Kakoyiannis Foundation, President Christofias said he had contacted the late Presidents wife Fotini and expressed his sympathy to her and her family.

At last we feel relief and satisfaction, and I am sure the family feels that too, the President said.

The corpse remains at the site of the new Strovolos cemetery on the outskirts of Nicosia while police and forensic experts are carrying out examinations.

    [02] CRISTOFIAS - LIMNITIS - COST

Cyprus has promised to the United Nations to cover any additional cost for the completion of the opening of the Limnitis check-point, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said, noting at the same time that the project will come to completion, unless the Turkish occupation forces create more obstacles in the way ahead.

President Christofias was speaking before his departure for Athens to inaugurate, with President of the Hellenic Republic Carolos Papoulias, the ``Michalis Kakoyiannis Foundation`` when he was asked to comment on reports according to which the USA has withdrawn financial assistance worth one and a half million U.S. dollars, promised for the completion of the works regarding the opening of Limnitis check-point, on the islands northwest.

Christofias clarified that no financial assistance had been decided to be withdrawn, adding that there has been an additional request to cover the remaining cost.

It seems that there are problems, he said.

He noted that the Republic of Cyprus has assumed an obligation vis-a-vis the United Nations to cover any remaining cost for this project.

[03] PRESIDENT - MONASTERY OF SAINT ANDREW

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias hopes that the Turkish Prime Minister has indeed consented to the restoration of the Turkish occupied monastery of Saint Andrew, in the Karpass peninsula.

The President was commenting on reports that Tayyip Erdogan has sent a letter to the primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbisop Chrysostomos II saying that he had agreed on the restoration of the Turkish occupied monastery.

Speaking before departing to Athens to inaugurate, with President of the Hellenic Republic Carolos Papoulias, the ``Michalis Kakoyiannis Foundation, President Christofias said he had raised the issue of the restoration of the Monastery to the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

``Talat was positive but said there were problems with people outside the Monastery selling various things``, who are probably settlers from Turkey, the President added.

[04] US CONGRESS MEMBERS - CLINTON - CYPRUS ISSUE

Five members of the US Congress, in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, are bringing to her attention two recent State Department actions that are inconsistent with wishes recently expressed by 132 members of the House, including the chairmen and ranking members of the Foreign Affairs and Appropriations Committees and a majority of the members of the pertinent subcommittees.

Expressing the belief that these actions are inconsistent with Clintons wishes and policies, the members of the Congress, Gus Bilirakis, Elton Gallengly, Shelley Berkley, Jim Costa and Michael McMahon note that Ambassador to Turkey James Jeffreys reference on February 3 that Turkey.doesnt invade neighbours. It has security concerns in Cyprus contradicts the rational and purpose of the European Parliaments resolution enacted February 10, 2010, which called on Turkey to withdraw its troops from Cyprus.
