  • [01] BROWN - ERDOGAN - CYPRUS

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for huge courage on the part of all sides involved in the question of Cyprus and a spirit of compromise, if an agreement is to be reached.

Prime Minister Erdogan and I also discussed Cyprus. Let there be no doubt, reaching an agreement on Cyprus will require huge courage on all sides, Brown said in his remarks during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in London.

Brown said that he discussed the Cyprus question with Erdogan, adding that it will require bold leadership and a spirit of compromise, but I believe that progress is being made.

I applaud the leadership being shown by both leaders. Both parties must now maintain that momentum and turn the dream of peace into a reality for all the people of Cyprus and Britain remains ready to do what we can to support this, Brown noted.

    [02] ECONOMY - MEASURES

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has described the government`s package of measures for the economy as balanced and ambitious, noting that it aims at cutting expenses, increasing revenue and giving emphasis on development and the social policy.

In statements on Thursday, Stephanou said the package, which will soon be announced, includes measures to combat tax evasion, adding that Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis would be brainstorming the political parties, with an aim to reach the highest possible level of consensus.

Replying to questions, he said development and enhancing the government`s social policy was the best possible weapon against the financial crisis. He also said that the package takes into consideration all facts, problems and needs, adding that increasing revenue did not necessarily mean imposing higher taxes but combating tax evasion, which he described as an open wound.

Stephanou said that a few weeks ago the Minister of Finance had presented a package of 22 measures to the House of Representatives to combat tax evasion. ``We believe that if and when these measures are adopted, we will be able to decisively overcome this problem,`` he added.

    [03] EUROSTAT - INFLATION

The annual inflation rate in Cyprus recorded a further increase in February 2010 but dropped in the Eurozone and the EU as a whole.

According to figures released by Eurostat, inflation in Cyprus rose from 2.5% in January to 2.8% in February, which was the Eurozone`s second highest percentage.

In the Eurozone, inflation dropped to 0.9% from 1.0% in January. In the EU, it dropped to 1.4% from 1.7% in January.

In February 2010, the lowest annual rates were observed in Latvia with -4.3%, Ireland -2.4% and Lithuania -0.6%, and the highest in Hungary with 5.6%, Romania 4.5% and Poland 3.4%. Compared with January 2010, annual inflation fell in 15 member states, remained stable in five and rose in five.

    [04] BAGHDATIS - ATP MASTERS

Cypriot tennis champion Marcos Baghdatis defeated with 2-1 the world`s no 1 tennis player Roger Federer in a match for the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells in California.

After 2 hours and 22 minutes, Baghdatis, 33rd in ATP rankings, defeated Federer with 7-5, 5-7 and 7-6.

The 24 year old, who had lost to Federer in their first six encounters including the 2006 Australian Open final, told the crowd, ``Seven is my lucky number. Im just very happy``.

Baghdatis will next meet Spaniard Tommy Robredo, 23rd in world rankings, who beat Israel`s Dudi Sela 6-3 6-0.
