  • [01] PRESIDENT CYPRUS SOLUTION

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has called on the United Nations and international community to direct their efforts towards Turkey so that the road leading to a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem opens.

Speaking at a memorial service of an 18 years old soldier killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion in Cyprus, President Christofias said that the clear objective is to end the occupation and colonization and restore and safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms of all people in Cyprus, Creek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, with a view to make the people of Cyprus the masters of their land.

``The solution that we seek must truly reunite Cyprus and its people, institutions, economy and territory on the basis of the High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979 and UN Resolutions on Cyprus, he noted.

He added that it has to be a solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as defined by the UN Security Council Resolutions which will ensure the unity of the state, with a single and indivisible sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship.``

This is the clear basis and the agreed framework, he said, noting that ``this is our sides painful and historical compromise, this is the only realistic way through which we can reverse the fait accompli of the occupation.``

President Christofias assured that he faithfully defends these principles, adding that ``we are committed to this framework. We will strive to achieve a comprehensive and negotiated solution as soon as possible.

We are not compromised with the status quo that mortgages the very existence of our country,`` he pointed out.

At the same time, he continued, we expect concrete examples on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot leadership and Ankara showing that they share the same political will for a solution with ours and that their words and declarations made from time to time are not just part of a communication blame game.

It must be shown in practice, at the negotiating table that they abide by the agreed framework. Their proposals must also be reasonable so that they create conditions for achieving a realistic compromise.``

The UN and the international community, as he said, know very well the positions of both sides at the negotiating table.

We expect, he added, both the representatives of the United Nations and the international community to direct their efforts on Turkey so that it finally moves from words to action with a view to open the road for a viable and functional solution.

We will steadily continue to show our determination and spirit of cooperation, President said making it clear that we want and seek a solution here and now.

``Not any solution that will simply close the Cyprus problem. But a solution based on basic principles, functional, just under the circumstances and viable.

We are struggling with all our strengths to heal the wounds and achieve redemption and vindication through the reunification of our country, President Christofias concluded.

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

    [02] HOUSE PRESIDENT DIRECT TALKS

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has called for unity on the domestic front in order to tackle the Turkish intransigence appearing in the direct talks aiming at reaching a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Garoyian was speaking at a memorial service for those who were killed during the coup d` etat of 15 July 1974 and the Turkish invasion that followed which was held Sunday in Limassol, on the south coast of Cyprus.

As he said, the direct talks are at a critical hub and warned that if the Turkish side does not abandon its intransigence and continues to pursue a confederal solution, the direct talks will lead to further degeneration.

In such a case, he added, the United Nations and the international community in general would record one more a failure.

``If they want to avoid such failure and if the UN wants to preserve its image and credibility, then Turkey should soon feel the need to finally respect the principles and decisions of both the UN and the European Union and, of course, the principles of international law ``, he noted.

    [03] DEFENCE MINISTER CYPRUS ISSUE

Greek Cypriot sides will for a solution to the Cyprus problem is given, Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas has said.

Speaking at a memorial service for soldiers killed during 1974 Turkish invasion, Papacostas said that if Turkey really wants a viable solution to the Cyprus problem, this is something that remains to be seen at the negotiating table.

We realize and acknowledge that it is not easy at all to reverse the 1974 fait accompli caused by the Turkish invasion, the long occupation and division of our country, he said, adding that we will encounter adversities and difficulties ahead.

He also said that the coup and the Turkish invasion have caused many wounds to the people.

[04] CYPRUS FM BRITISH FM MEETING

Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou currently on a visit to London will meet on Monday with his British counterpart William Hauge.

Kyprianou and Hauge will mainly discuss the Cyprus issue as well as the bilateral relations between the two countries, Euro-Turkish relations and the Middle East question.

British Minister is also expected to brief Kyprianou on his conclusions drawn from his long meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davoutoglou regarding the Cyprus issue.

The two ministers met for the first time after Hauge took office, on the sidelines of the European Union-Latin America Meeting held in Madrid last May.
