  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - OVERSEAS HELLENISM

President Demetris Christofias said on Tuesday that Cyprus needs the efforts of overseas Hellenism in the direction of the US Administration, in order to convince Turkey to change its stance on the Cyprus problem.

Welcoming a group of Greek origin children from the United States, President Christofias said Cypriots and Greeks living abroad have always supported Cyprus and the efforts for a solution, and called on the children to become ambassadors of their homeland in the countries they live in.

Speaking to the children about the situation in Cyprus, he said the goal is to free Cyprus of the Turkish occupation troops and allow the Cypriots to decide how they want to live together and how to run their country.

Turkey brings into northern Turkish occupied Cyprus thousands of Turkish settlers and provides them with housing and jobs. This is a huge problem for the whole island, he said.

President Christofias said Turkey`s policy on the Cyprus problem was not leading to a settlement that would create conditions of freedom and respect of human rights on the island.

The aim, he pointed out, was a bizonal bicommunal federation, and elaborated on how a federation works.

The President also referred to the issue of missing persons in both communities.

The visit takes place two days before the anniversary of the July 15 of 1974 military coup against the then President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III. He managed to escape returned to the island in December the same year. Five days after the coup, Turkish troops invaded Cyprus.

The children visited the Presidents office and were informed about what happened on the day of the coup, Makarios escape route and the consequences of the tragedy that hit the island.

    [02] KYPRIANOU - HAGUE

British Foreign Secretary William Hague expressed Monday his support for the UNs efforts to achieve a Cyprus settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.

We want to see a settlement agreed and successfully implemented to deliver a stable, prosperous and united Cyprus, operating as a valued partner within the EU, at the earliest opportunity, Hague said after welcoming on Monday in London his Cypriot counterpart Markos Kyprianou.

The two ministers had a 20-minute tete-a-tete meeting this morning, followed by a meeting including delegations from both countries. As Hague stated, the two ministers had a wide-ranging discussion and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relationships.

In his statements after the meeting, the Cypriot Foreign Minister noted that they focused on Cyprus issue and the direct talks aiming to find a solution and the problems encountered and also the views on how things could move forward adding that they agreed to keep in touch over the coming months.

    [03] PETSALNIKOS - CYPRUS

President of the Hellenic Parliament Philipos Petsalnikos said on Monday that the solution of the Cyprus problem could be no other than a bizonal bicommunal federation, in order to be functional and viable, noting that such a solution would be in the interests of the Greek Cypriots, the Turkish Cypriots, Greece, Turkey and all the countries of the region.

Speaking after a meeting in Nicosia with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, Petsalnikos said that he had pointed out to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that such a solution would be in the interests of Turkey, adding that it was time that efforts, through a serious dialogue, felled the last wall in Europe.

Petsalnikos noted that his trip to Cyprus was his first official visit abroad, and that he discussed the Cyprus problem and the latest developments with President Christofias.

He reiterated that Greece`s aim was ``the solution to be found through dialogue to be functional and viable, a solution that will be based on UN Security Council decisions, the principles, the values and the acquis of the EU.``

    [04] SYLIKIOTIS - TRIPS

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis will be flying to Brussels on Wednesday to participate in the EU Informal Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs, which will be discussing the Common European Asylum System, among other issues.

On Friday, Sylikiotis will be travelling to Athens to represent the government at an event organised by the Federation of Cypriot Organisations in Greece (OKOE) to protest the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the continuing occupation of the island`s northern part.

Sylikiotis will be returning to Cyprus on Saturday.
