[01] REMAINS - CMP EXCAVATIONSRemains believed to belong to Turkish Cypriots missing since 1963-64 have been exhumed from a well at Parissinos area in Nicosia, where excavations are under way by Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot scientists, in the framework of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) project aiming to establish the fate of missing persons in Cyprus.Representatives of the Greek Cypriot side at CMP Elias Georgiades told CNA that human bones were found on Wednesday at one of the three wells in the area where excavations are taking place. He noted that there is water and mud in the well and that the whole process of the excavations is very difficult as water has to be pumped out from the well and to sieve the mud to collect any available evidence. Georgiades said that any remains retrieved are registered and photographed on site and they are placed in special envelopes labeled with relevant codes and are being transported to the CMP anthropological laboratory, where they are scientifically examined by archeologists, specialized in forensic osteology. Following that, he said, DNA samples will be taken and will be compared with DNA samples taken from Turkish Cypriot relatives of missing persons to ascertain to whom the remains belong to. Asked when excavations are expected to be concluded at the three wells, Georgiades said that their aim is to finish by the end of August, and underlined the contribution of the scientists working on the site. He also noted that the Turkish Cypriot side and the UN are being informed about the course of the excavations. As regards the other teams of scientists working at other sites, Georgiades said that one of them is now working in the occupied areas where also remains have been found. [02] ROAD WORKS DIRECTOR OF PWDSignificant road works will be carried out in the next few months, which will contribute to boosting Cyprus economy, Director of Public Works Department Alecos Michaelides has said.In statements to CNA Michaelides said in the area of Nicosia works of total value 30 million euros will be carried out. In particular, improvement works will start in the next months in Prodromos Avenue, Ayios Ilarionas, RIK Avenue and in Aglatzia. A major project in Limassol is the road, which connects Limassol harbour with the interurban network, with a total expenditure of 50 million euros. Four important road works are promoted in Paphos, the road to Paphos Airport, the road to the Tombs of Kings, the road Paphos-Yeroskipou and the circuitous by the VIOFOS area. [03] LABOUR MINISTER EMPLOYMENTThe promotion of measures to support employment and to subsidise the employment of unemployed persons led to a drop in the number of unemployed persons in July by 1.4% and created the prospect for the gradual growth of the Cypriot economy, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Soteroulla Charalambous has said.In statements to CNA, Charalambous said that in July there was an increase of 439 registered unemployed persons compared to 1,249 in July 2009. ``We do not consider the problem solved,`` she said, adding that the labour market continues to be under pressure. Charalambous said the drop in unemployment was the result of measures taken by the Government, especially over the past six months. Replying to questions, Charalambous said that one of the reasons for the positive developments was the fact that indicators in the tourism sector were better than last year, and that this sector, along with the constructions industry, had absorbed many unemployed persons. Charalambous said that the Ministry of Labour was evaluating measures to promote employment, and that ``we are open to proposals to improve the measures,`` for which the Government had earmarked about 20 million EUR. ``It seems we are on the right track. The measures, as they have been planned, meet the real needs of the businesses and the unemployed persons, and that is why they have borne fruit. If it is necessary to improve them, we are open to suggestions,`` she added. A total of 7,765,978 EUR was spent in 2009 for programmes by the Human Resources Development Authority to support employment and to tackle unemployment, and in 2010, by July 31, the amount was 14,345,327 EUR. [04] IMPORTS EXPORTS JAN-MAY 2010Total imports/arrivals (covering total imports from third countries and arrivals from other Member States) in January-May 2010 amounted to 2.546,1mn Euro as compared to 2.328,8mn Euro in January-May 2009, according to Cyprus Statistical Service, which published the monthly report Intra-Extra E.U Trade Statistics (Summarised Data) for May 2010.Total exports/dispatches (covering total exports to third countries and dispatches to other Member States) in January-May 2010 were 438,6mn Euro compared to 404,3mn Euro in January-May 2009. The trade deficit was 2.107,5mn Euro in January-May 2010 compared to 1.924,5mn Euro in the corresponding period of 2009.
