President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Thursday that the conclusions of the European Council rightly mention that EU-NATO cooperation should be based on a spirit of mutual support, with respect to autonomy in decision making.

Speaking at the European Council in Brussels, President Christofias noted that they should guarantee that this cooperation will be strictly carried out in the context of international law, as described in the UN Charter.

President Christofias, accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou, participated in the European Council, which was held in Brussels under the Belgian presidency.

The main issues discussed were relations between the EU and strategic partners, and the work of the special team for economic governance. The EU 27 adopted the conclusions.

In the context of discussions regarding the relations of the EU with China, President Christofias said Cyprus considers China as one of the EU`s most important strategic partners, and hopes that relations would be developed to the greatest possible extent.

He added that EU cooperation with China was important for tackling issues, such as Iran, Northern Korea and the non proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, which he said was why the EU should strengthen its dialogue with China in issues of mutual interest as an equal partner.

Regarding international security, President Christofias said the EU should regard China as an associate and not a competitor, through a more realistic prism that will take into consideration the status of the country in the international political and economic scene.
