[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS NY MEETING UNSGPresident of the Republic Demetris Christofias said that he had never informed the UN Secretary General that he is ready to make concessions during next weeks meeting with Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu at the UN Headquarters in New York.Speaking on the sidelines of an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the Cooperative Movement and the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, the President recalled that he had appealed to political leaders to wait until he returns from the 18th November New York meeting and then comment on developments. There is nothing worrying, he added. In statements from Seoul, Ban had said he expected the two leaders to show the courage required to break the stalemate on the remaining core issues during the ongoing Cyprus talks. Christofias told reporters that if they had listened to Bans statements on Cyprus, they would have known that he had not said anything new. Invited to comment on reports that he had sent a letter to Ban in view of his meeting with the SG, President Christofias pointed out I have not told the SG I am ready to make any concessions. Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. President Christofias is engaged in peace talks with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country. The SG has invited the two leaders to New York for a meeting on the 18th which is hoped to give a new impetus to the talks. [02] UNSG NY MEETING LEADERSUN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou to show the courage required to break the stalemate on the remaining core issues during the ongoing Cyprus talks.The position is outlined in a readout of the Secretary-Generals meeting on Friday in Seoul with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister of Turkey, in the margins of the G20 Summit. According to the readout the two discussed the G20 Summit and the UN role in that context, particularly regarding development and specifically the Millennium Development Goals. They also exchanged views in detail on Cyprus, it said. The Secretary-General said a solution was long overdue and that he decided to host the forthcoming trilateral talks in New York on 18th November with the leaders of the two communities. The Secretary-General, according to the readout, said the leaders would need to show the courage required to break the stalemate on the remaining core issues. The Secretary-General said he counted on Turkeys continued engagement. [03] PACE POURGOURIDES CAVUSOGLUChairman of the Legal and Human Rights Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Christos Pourgourides vehemently criticized PACE President Mevlut Cavusoglu for his actions during his recent visit to Cyprus. In an intervention during a session of the PACE Standing Committee in Antalya, Turkey, Pourgourides criticized Cavusoglu for the contacts he held in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus which were outside the legal framework of a PACE chairman, an official statement said here Friday.Your actions to meet with officials of the illegal entity in the occupied part of Cyprus at their offices, apart from being an unprecedented move, it also sends the wrong and damaging messages, especially at a critical juncture of the talks for a solution to the Cyprus issue, said Pourgourides. He also said that PACE chairmen should promote respect of international legality and of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus. Replying, Cavusoglu rejected Pourgourides criticism but agreed with the Cypriot parliamentarians position on the reunification of Cyprus, something which PACE supports as well, he said. He also said the aim of his visit to Cyprus was to convey the message of reunification and reconciliation, adding that during his contacts on the island, he made every possible effort to send the right messages. [04] GDP CYPRUS EUROSTATThe Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Cyprus has increased for the third consecutive term, according to flash estimates published by Eurostat, the statistical service of the European Union.However, Eurostat shows a slowdown in the development in Eurozone and in the Eurozone while the recession in the EU is becoming deeper. During the third quarter of 2010, the Cyprus GDP increased by 0.6% compared to the second quarter. According to the Eurostat press release, GDP increased by 0.4% in both the euro area1 (EA16) and the EU27 during the third quarter of 2010, compared with the previous quarter. In the second quarter of 2010, growth rates were +1.0% in both zones. Meanwhile, according to the Flash Estimate compiled by the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, the GDP growth rate in real terms during the third quarter of 2010 is estimated at 1,7% over the corresponding quarter of 2009 (-2,7%).
