  • [01] CYPRUS - EU PRESIDENCY - INTERVIEW

The importance of organizing a successful Presidency of the Council of the EU, during the second term of 2012, lies in the fact that Cyprus has to prove it is a capable, fully-fledged and credible member of the EU, the Head of the Secretariat of the Cyprus EU Presidency, Andreas Moleskis, says in an interview with CNA.

Moleskis notes that he takes courage from the recent positive feedback he got from Council officials, on the quality of Cyprus contribution to the common Trio Presidency programme and the state of preparations.

In his interview, he refers for the first time to the issues of social cohesion the Cyprus EU Presidency intends to highlight, but adds that these issues need to acquire substance. For this to happen, he says, the European Commission has to promote legislative initiatives, and adds that, to this end, Cyprus cooperation with the competent European institution has already started.

Moleskis also expresses his confidence in the ability of Cyprus to handle issues of major political significance for the Union, like the negotiations for the EUs financial perspectives in 2014-2020.

Especially on Eurogroup issues, he notes that Cyprus responsibility is expected to be very big, assuming the EU Presidency after three consecutive Presidencies held by non-Eurozone Members States.
