  • [01] CYPRUS TALKS - DOWNER

The UN Secretary Generals Special Advisor for Cyprus Alexander Downer has said that there is an intense activity as regards the Cyprus talks aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

In statements to journalists after the conclusion of Wednesdays meeting between President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu in the framework of direct Cyprus talks, Downer said that during the meeting further progress was achieved on the issue of the economy.

He added that the leaders of the two communities also exchanged further opinions on the chapter of governance and power sharing.

Their next meeting will take place on Tuesday 21 December. In the meantime, their representatives will be meeting again on Friday and Monday. So there is quite an intense activity of meetings of both the leaders and representatives level, he went on to note.

Answering to questions, Dower said that the leaders can meet the expectations of the UN Secretary General until their meeting in Geneva, to take place 26th of January.

He pointed out that since their successful meeting in New York on the 18th of November the leaders have been making a big effort to make sure that the work is well done and that convergences can be achieved on the core issues between now and the 26th of January which is when the meeting will take place in Geneva.

    [02] UN UNFICYP - RESOLUTION

The Security Council adopted by majority a resolution on Cyprus extending the mandate of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for a further six months.

Fourteen members voted for the resolution and one (Turkey) voted against the resolution.

UNFICYP is made up of 859 military personnel and 68 UN police officers. It arrived in Cyprus in March 1964 after intercommunal fighting broke out between the islands two communities.

    [03] EU MINISTERS - TURKEY

Turkey`s EU accession negotiations are entering a more demanding stage and their acceleration will depend on the fulfillment of obligations, namely the implementation of the protocol and the normalisation of Ankara`s relations with the Republic of Cyprus, the EU Council of Ministers notes in its conclusions.

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou expressed satisfaction over the conclusions, which refer to the enlargement of the EU and all candidate countries.

An indication that the negotiations are at a crucial point is the fact that for the first time in four years, there will be no meeting for the opening of a new chapter.

The Belgian presidency of the EU had set the goal of opening the chapter on competition, which however will not be opened during Belgium`s term, which expires on December 31.
