[01] CYPRUS GOVERNMENT - BASKETBALL INCIDENTS
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus condemns the unacceptable
events that took place in the basketball game between Cypriot team
APOEL and Turkish team Pinar Karsigiaka in the context of the FIBA Mens
EuroChallenge Cup.
According to an announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ``the
President of the Republic himself has already also condemned the
incidents``.
``In exercising its duties in an effective manner, the Cyprus Police
Force took right from the outset all necessary measures and provided
full protection to the mission of the visiting team, which had not been
put in jeopardy. The aforesaid is also confirmed by statements made by
the head of the Turkish mission``, the announcement says.
Regrettably, Foreign Ministry`s announcement says, such dismal events
do occasionally occur at sporting events in European countries.
``Cypriot teams were treated similarly in the past while in Turkey,
although the Government of the Republic of Cyprus has never tried to
attach any political connotation to such incidents. It is also reminded
that Turkish sports teams have competed many times in Cyprus without
any problems whatsoever``, is added.
[02] GAROYIAN WISHES
The House President Marios Garoyian expressed on Wednesday the
expectation that 2011 will be the year of Cyprus reunification.
Garoyian was speaking after he had listened to Christmas carols by the
Police band, the National Guard band and the band of the Greek military
contingent in Cyprus (ELDYK).
He also wished that the new year will bring economic growth both for
Greece and Cyprus and will minimize repercussions of the financial
crisis, creating the necessary social cohesion. Garoyian thanked the
Greek military force in Cyprus for its longstanding contribution to
strengthening the feeling of security in Cyprus.
