  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - ARMENIAN PRESIDENT - OFFICIAL DINNER

The leadership of Turkey must understand that arrogant policies and threats towards an EU member state are not in line with the countrys European aspirations, President Demetris Christofias stressed.

He also pointed out that Ankaras insistence on maintaining its illegal occupation of part of Cyprus and on encouraging illegal immigration to the islands northern Turkish occupied areas, policies which constitute a blatant violation of every principle of international law and international and European rule of law, are not consistent with Turkeys status as an EU candidate member state.

In his toast at the official diner in honour of the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, President Christofias said that the geostrategic importance which Turkey has does not absolve it of its responsibilities for the crime of occupation and illegal settling nor does it minimize its obligations toward the EU.

President Christofias noted that the people of Armenia and Cyprus share ecumenical values and principles and referred to the prospects of further cooperation, expressing support to Armenias efforts to implement the European Neighbourhood Policy with an Armenia Action Plan.

As an EU member state close to Armenia Cyprus can play a bridging role between the EU and your country. In this framework we continue to highlight the importance of the tangible and continuous enhancement of relations between the EU and Armenia in all fields, he added.

He said that in this framework Armenia has supported steadily the struggles of the people of Cyprus for vindication and survival and referred to efforts for a Cyprus settlement through negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot side.

The President stressed that fully acknowledging difficulties and the historic responsibility to continue the struggle until the final vindication, we are working tirelessly to find a settlement by the Cypriots for the Cypriots, without mediating processes, arbitration or other foreign interventions and impositions, adding that Armenia and Cyprus know very well that Turkey is a determining factor in developments in our region.

Christofias said that we are working constructively to achieve progress in negotiations for the Cyprus question, adding that despite difficulties our efforts send out the message that our side shows in practice its will for a settlement.

The burden to prove the will for a political settlement in Cyprus lies on Turkey. Our call towards Turkey is a call of peace and cooperation. We hope that it will respond positively to it, he said.

The President also said that we follow with interest the moves towards normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey and your initiatives towards this direction, expressing hope that they will overcome any difficulties.

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides have been engaged in direct negotiations with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

[02] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - ARMENIAN PRESIDENT - TALKS

Armenia supports Turkeys EU course but believes that Turkey cannot join the EU unless it reconciles itself with its past and develops constructive relations with its neighboring countries, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has stressed.

The Armenian President, on an official visit here, said that he fully supports Cyprus positions as regards the Cyprus problem, noting that the future of the Cyprus Armenia relations is a bright one.

In statements to journalists after the conclusion of his meeting with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias, followed by official talks of the two delegations, President Sargsyan also referred to the four agreements signed between the two countries, saying that they are very important for further enhancing bilateral relations.
