    The Cyprus issue was among the issues discussed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in London, in his Wednesday meetings with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague.

    According to a UN spokesman, during his London meetings the UN Secretary also discussed events in Egypt, the Middle East peace process, Sudan, Darfur, Cote d`Ivoire, Afghanistan, UN reform and conflict prevention.

    The Secretary-General met separately with Foreign Secretary William Hague and International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell. According to UN spokesman in his meeting with the two Secretaries of State, they discussed Egypt, Sudan, development assistance, UN reform, UN Women and Cyprus.

    Meanwhile on Thursday, after talks in Berlin with the German President, the Secretary General was asked about the Greek-Macedonian name issue.

    UN Secretary replied that the issue has been discussed through his personal envoy, Matthew Nimitz.

    He expressed the hope that the name issue which has been long standing and which has very important implications in bilateral relationships as well as relations in the region should be resolved as soon as possible.

    I will do my best efforts to encourage first of all my personal envoy as well as the parties concerned, the Greek Government and the FYROM Government, to sincerely engage in dialogue, he said.

    [02] CNA MINISTRY SEMINAR

    The Ministry of Education and Culture, together with the Cyprus News Agency, organized Friday a one-day seminar entitled Media and Education.

    The aim of the seminar was to contribute to the effort of Media to cooperate with the field of education in improving the citizens abilities to judge, evaluate, choose and reproduce the information received by the Media with strong criteria, protected from delusion and sensationalism.

    The opening ceremony of the seminar, which is under the auspices of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, was addressed by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou (on behalf of the President), Education and Culture Minister Andreas Demetriou, Nicos Tornaritis, chairman of the House Education Committee, George Penintaex, Acting Director of CNA and Antonis Makrides, President of the Union of Cyprus Journalists.

    Among the issues that were examined were Media and Education in the Information Era and formulating an Education policy.

    Speakers included Costakis Constantinou, Chairman of CNA, Dr Chrysanthos Chrysanthou of the Cyprus University, Themis Themistocleous, Director General of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, Frank Webster of City University, Betina Davou and George Plios of the University of Athens.
