  • [01] GOVERNMENT TRIPARTITE MEETING

No proposal has been made to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias for a tripartite meeting in the Swiss city of Davos, along with the Turkish Cypriot leader and the President of the European Commission, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said.

While speaking to the press, in the margins of the Cyprus Exports Award ceremony, in Nicosia, Stephanou did not confirm relevant articles in the press, stating that as far as he is concerned, no such request was forwarded in 2011 to the European Commission either.

The Government Spokesman noted, however, that the Greek Cypriot side is in favour of further EU engagement, particularly when it comes to aspects of the Cyprus problem in direct relation with the EU.

Stephanou added that the position of the EU itself refers both to engaging at this level as well as to technocratic assistance in the negotiation talks, and noted that the Greek Cypriot side has already welcomed this.

Finally, Stephanou said that the position of the President of the Republic, to further utilize Turkeys accession process in the EU, is well-known.

Thus, he noted, Turkey will be persuaded to change its position on the Cyprus problem and contribute in opening the way for a solution.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.

    [02] CYPRUS EXPORT AWARDS PRESIDENT

President Demetris Christofias said on Monday that the government is implementing a plan to support the real economy, the financially weaker groups of the population and fiscal consolidation, while it is also correcting contortions and at the same time maintaining and strengthening the welfare state.

The main objective was and remains to use the comparative advantages of Cyprus,`` he said, noting that ``in this context measures are being taken to create the appropriate business climate and the necessary infrastructure that will help the Cypriot businesses to successfully cope in the new competitive international environment and respond positively to the business opportunities and challenges arising.``

Addressing the Cyprus Export Award 2009 ceremony in Nicosia, President Christofias said that ``Cypriot businesspeople have proven over the course of time the maturity, determination, dynamism and readiness that characterise them and that are necessary to respond to modern challenges and adverse conditions.``

President Christofias noted that the financial environment was improving and that ``we are presenting positive growth rates and restricting the fiscal deficit within the targets we have set.``

He referred to the commercial and business sector, which ``plays a significant role in economic stability and development,`` as well as private initiative, which ``managed to effectively exploit the opportunities that arose at times, with the cooperation and support of the state.``

Furthermore, he said that the ability of the businesspeople to infiltrate existing and new markets and become established ``creates new prospects for the growth of the economy of our country.``

He noted that ``in this context the government is continuing and intensifying its actions to enhance exports in the sectors of agricultural and industrial products and services, by implementing a package of promotion measures,`` which he said were already bearing fruit.

[03] SPOKESMAN PROTESTS TURKISH OCCUPIED NORTH

The people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will benefit by a solution to the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has stressed.

In statements, Stephanou noted that that the Republic of Cyprus has no involvement with the demonstrations in the occupied areas of the island, which are linked to the Turkeys economic policy.

Stephanou said that the Turkish Cypriots with the demonstrations are expressing their emotions and their feelings. He added that the Turkish Cypriots, as Cypriots, have dignity.

He also stressed that the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, will be benefited by a solution of the Cyprus problem that will end the Turkish occupation, reunite the island and the its people, and will be in favour of the interests of the Cypriots, and not the foreigners.
