  • [01] UNSG SECURITY COUNCIL REMARKS

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that in the Geneva meeting he had with the leaders of the two communities of Cyprus the two cleared up some of their differences but much more work is needed.

In remarks to the press, following his briefing of the Security Council of his two-week trip to Switzerland, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom and Germany, Ban said in Geneva, he met with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders where they cleared up some of their differences. But much more work is needed, he underlined.

Asked if he was satisfied with the progress so far reached in the negotiations and whether he would meet the leaders again in March in New York, the SG said I will be satisfied when both leaders will agree completely on all the core issues, but I was reasonably satisfied with, first of all, their commitment to address all these issues through negotiation that I appreciated very much.

He said the negotiations in Geneva were much more productive and much more lively in terms of their exchange of views and also I participated myself, providing certain comments.

Ban said he really appreciated that kind of positive atmosphere between the two leaders and will continue to have another round of negotiations soon, noting that the detailed timing and agenda and place will be decided as his special Advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, is continuing to assess the situation on the ground.

    [02] BRITISH MPs CYPRUS VISIT

British Parliamentarians from the Cyprus All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) will be visiting Cyprus next week, with an aim to deepen the British Parliament`s understanding of Cyprus and how best to support a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem.

Chairman of the Cyprus APPG David Burrowes, who will be leading the delegation, said he was ``pleased that the UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to see a solution to the Cyprus problem,`` adding that ``the Cyprus APPG`s overall aim is to foster good relations between Britain and Cyprus and visiting the island is an important way to fulfill this aim.``

According to a press release, the delegation will comprise at least seven British MPs, who will have formal and informal ministerial meetings, as well as meetings with members from the House of Representatives.
