  • [01] GOVERMENT - EPP - CYPRUS ELECTIONS

A statement by the President of the European People`s Party (EPP) Wilfried Martens caused Tuesday the reaction of Cypriot government.

Congratulating the oppositions leader Nicos Anastasiades for its partys victory in Sundays parliamentary elections, Martens talked about a ``Euro-phobic government`` and ``marginalization of Europe by the Cypriot President.

Replying to the statement, the Deputy Government Spokesman Christos Christofides said that the statement of Martens is in stark contrast to the realities, the attitudes and assessments of the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and major European leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who as he said, come from the ranks of the European People`s Party.

Speaking about the efforts of the Government to put pressure on the Turkish side in relation to the Cyprus problem through the countrys EU accession process, he deplored the oppositions attitude which as he said affects those efforts.

``We dont want to believe that while we are making tremendous efforts in Europe, political parties here in Cyprus can carry messages in Europe which affect this effort, affect Cyprus and its struggle`` he said.

Christofides pointed out that in the last three years Christofias government has proved even to the most skeptical that EU factor has been fully utilized both in relation to efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and to achieve the greatest benefit for the people of Cyprus.

Replying to a question about the information about convergence of a multilateral conference on Cyprus problem by the end of the year, Christofides said that the Government can not make assumptions.

What the President does, is to be prepared in the best possible way, to take initiatives and utilize the data both internationally and in Europe, in order to create those conditions that will allow talks to progress towards an agreed overall solution of the Cyprus problem, he said.

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974. A joint meeting between Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, will be held in Geneva, on July 7.

    [02] BRITAIN - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The British government remains committed and is firmly supporting the current settlement talks in Cyprus, seeking to end the continued division of the island, member of the Cyprus and Greece Team at the Foreign Office said in a replying letter to President of the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood in the Britain Tony Yerolemou, who had sent a letter to the British Prime Minister about Cyprus on February 27.

Hopkins noted that this is a process by Cypriots and for Cypriots, where the onus is on both leaders to agree on the shape of a future bizonal, bicommunal federation. The United Kingdom will continue to support the leaders in their endeavour to reach a solution that balances the interests of both communities.

He added that the settlement process still represents the best chance there has ever been to deal with the wide range of issues affecting all Cypriots. It has the potential to resolve many of the issues facing Cypriots of all communities, and the UK is doing all that it can to help both sides reach a deal. Our relationship with Turkey allows us to discuss challenging topics, including ending the division of Cyprus, and we will continue to underline the need for progress.

    [03] ECHR - CYPRIOT - TURKEY - COMPENSATION

The European Court of Human Rights awarded Tuesday 1,3 mln euros to Kostas Kalisperas for pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage, based on an ECHR judgment of 22 September 2009 on the case of Andreas Loizou and others v. Turkey, for the loss of their property following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

Kalisperas, along with a group of 28 Greek Cypriots applied to the ECHR, which subsequently ruled against Turkey, for violating the right to respect for private and family life and the home, as well as violating the right of property, on account of the applicants deprivation of their home and properties.

In todays ruling, the Court also awarded 15,000 euros to the applicants jointly, which Turkey has to cover with regards to costs and expenses.

[04] EUROPEAN COMMISSION - CYPRUS - SOIL SEALING

The European Commission has recommended that member states should take action in order to mitigate the adverse effects on the ecosystem, caused by urban expansion and soil sealing. In a report, it is noted that Cyprus is amongst the three member states with the largest degree of soil sealing.

According to the European Commission, every year in Europe, large areas of soil are lost to urban sprawl and transport infrastructure. Soil sealing causes an irreversible loss of the biological functions of soil. As water can neither infiltrate nor evaporate, water runoff increases, sometimes leading to catastrophic floods. Landscapes are fragmented and habitats become too small or too isolated to support certain species. In addition, the food production potential of land is lost forever.
