[01] PRESIDENT - HUNGARY - CONDOLENCESPresident Demetris Christofias expressed here today deep sorrow over the death of former Hungarian President Ferenc Madl.President Christofias visited the Hungarian embassy in Nicosia this morning and signed the book of condolences. On behalf of the government and the people of Cyprus, as well as on my own behalf, I express our feelings of deep sorrow for the passing away of Dr. Ferenc Madl, former President of the Republic of Hungary and a distinguished Hungarian politician and scientist, he states. President Christofias also notes that at this moment of mourning I extend our most sincere condolences to his bereaved family, as well as to the government and the friendly people of Hungary for their immense national loss. [02] CYPRO-SWISS AGREEMENTCyprus and Switzerland have signed a bilateral agreement on the imposition of restrictions on the illegal import of cultural goodsThe agreement was concluded in the context of the general efforts for the protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of both countries and the prevention of the illicit trafficking of cultural goods. It also specifies that the two countries will co-operate in the field by exchanging information, expertise and through the organization of exhibitions, conferences and training seminars. The agreement was signed, on May 24, after negotiations held between the representatives of Switzerland and the representatives of the Department of Antiquities, the Ministry of Communications and Works, the Legal Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by Michael Constantinides, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works and Benno Widmer, Head of the Specialized Service of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture. [03] INFLATION - INCREASEThe rate of inflation in Cyprus for May 2011 rose to 3.9% compared to 3.3% in April 2011. According to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, the Consumer Price Index for May 2011 increased by 0.58 units or 0.50% to 117.04 units compared to 116.46 in April 2011.This is mainly due to increases in the prices of certain fresh fruit, electricity and certain clothing and footwear items. Decreases have been recorded in the prices of fresh meat, certain fresh vegetables and purchase of motor cars. The rate of increase of the Index, and therefore the rate of inflation, for May 2011 rose to 3.9% compared to 3.3% in April 2011 and 1.6% in May 2010. For the period January-May 2011, the CPI recorded an increase of 3.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2010. [04] CYPRUS - GSSE - MEDALSCyprus has so far won 29 medals in the 14th Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE), which are being held in Liechtenstein, from May 30 to June 4.The Cypriot team has secured twelve gold, eleven silver and six bronze medals. Of the gold medals, ten were won in athletics, three in swimming, one in table tennis and one in shooting. In athletics, with gold medals were awarded Panagiotis Ioannou in 100 m. running, with a time of 10.6 sec and Anna Ramona Papaioannou with 11.86 sec. Nikandros Stylianou came first in pole vault, with a result of 5 m., Meropi Papnagiotou in 800 m. running, with a time of 2:10,52 and Zacharias Arnos in triple jump with 15.98 m. The three gold medals in swimming were won by Maria Papadopoulou and Alexandros Bakhtiarov in 100 m. butterfly, and Anna Styliannou in 400 m free style.
