  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - BARROSO - TURKEY

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has asked European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to exert his influence on Turkey, for the country to put more reasonable positions on the negotiating table, so that progress can be achieved towards a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The President, who met with the Commission President on Friday on the sidelines of the European Council in Brussels, said that Barroso assured him that he is in contact with the Turkish side and will convey his wish on the Turkish leadership.

President Christofias briefed Barroso on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem as well as the forthcoming Geneva meeting on July 7 between the Cypriot President, Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

The President said he expressed his readiness for achieving convergence until the last moment before Geneva, especially on international treaties, the role of the federal government and the federal units, as well as internal security and police.

    [02] OMIROU - CHINA - CYPRUS ISSUE

China continues to follow a firm stance of principles on the Cyprus issue, based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou said Friday, after a meeting he held with Chinese Ambassador in Nicosia Li Guobang.

Omirou told journalists after the meeting that China uses its influence on Turkey during its bilateral meetings, so that Ankara demonstrates a more positive stance on the Cyprus issue.

Turkey, Omirou added, must reconcile itself with the idea of ending the illegal occupation of Cyprus, restoring human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people of Cyprus and must accept a solution that will be based on the principles of international and European law.

In the light of the meeting that will take place on the 7th of July in Geneva between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, I explained that without exercising pressure and influence on Turkey, we will achieve no change of the current situation at the direct negotiations, he concluded.
