[01] LEADERS - CYPRUS ISSUE - INTENSIVE TALKSCypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will hold a new meeting Monday in the framework of UN led direct negotiations aiming to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.A press release by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) says that the meeting is the first of a series of all-day meetings to take place over the next several weeks. In statements after his previous meeting with Eroglu, on the 19th of July, President Christofias had said that they agreed that the intensive talks will be held twice a week, lasting all day, until the end of October. He added that there will be a break between August 7 to 21 and also during the UN General Assembly in September. [02] EXPLOSION - EU SUPPORTThe EU will do its utmost to help Cyprus through the difficult period it is facing, following a blast at the naval base Evangelos Florakis, near Limassol, and the subsequent destruction of the nearby power plant, at Vassiliko, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said on Thursday.You can be assured that Europe will assist and will help you, wherever it is possible Hahn said, while on a two-day visit in Cyprus. Hahn toured on Thursday the damaged Vassiliko power station, along with Ministers of Interior and Commerce, the Head of the European Commission in Cyprus, MEPs and the President and members of the board of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. Hahn, speaking during a press conference, said he had seen many disasters in his career, but nothing like the one at Vassiliko. The EU will help Cyprus to recover, Hahn said, adding that an extensive report will be submitted to the European Commission concerning the destruction at the station. [03] POLYVIOU - INVESTIGATIONSLawyer Polys Polyviou, who has been appointed by the Council of Ministers to carry out investigations into the explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on July 11, was sworn in on Thursday before Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca.The ceremony took place in the presence of Attorney General Petros Clerides and former Police explosives expert Antonis Shakallis, who was appointed by Polyviou to assist in the investigations. In statements after the ceremony, Polyviou said he would be starting work immediately, noting that over the past few days he has been studying reports but official work begins now. He added that his work would not interfere in Police investigations in any way and that he would be working through the summer in an effort to conclude his report by the end of September. [04] ARMY - MUNITIONSThe Ministry of Defence has announced that the National Guard continuously destroys obsolete, useless or problematic munitions at regular intervals, according to a programme or when need arises.In this context, 40 mm BOFOR munitions, used by arms that have been withdrawn from the National Guard and which were found to be weathered and worn, at a storehouse in Palodia village, were deemed dangerous and thus will be destroyed at shooting ranges, in line with relevant safety regulations. According to a press release, the National Guard received the munitions in 1992 and had a stock of 223,000. Since June 2010, 95,000 have been destroyed and the procedure will continue until the whole amount has been destroyed.
