  • [01] GENERATORS - US - ARRIVAL

The first American generators arrived in Cyprus on Sunday following the agreement signed between the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) and US company Energy International.

The generators will be joined to the electricity network of the island with an aim to increase Cyprus` electricity production capacity, crippled after the EAC main power station at Vassiliko suffered severe damage from the shockwave of last months explosion of munitions at a nearby naval base.

EAC Acting Spokesman Ioannis Tsouloftas told CNA that the generators are of a total capacity of 60 MW and will be immediately transferred and installed at the power station in Dhekelia.

He noted that the EAC has already made all the preparatory procedures for the installment of the generators and their operation will commence as soon as they are transferred and installed at the site.

Moreover, he said the arrival of these generators marks the completion of the first phase of the agreement with this particular company, adding that the transfer of generators was made possible in just 20 days after the signing of the contract.

He said the second shipment with generators with a capacity of 35 MW, to be installed at the power station in Moni, is expected to arrive in Cyprus some time next week.

In addition, the EAC Acting Spokesman said that the first fuel shipment has already been unloaded at Vassiliko.

The receiving of the first fuel shipment, after the tragedy of July 11, at Vassiliko is an important milestone in efforts to make the station operable.

This was made possible after sustained and effective efforts by the staff of the EAC, who worked around the clock to fix the fuel receiving system and fire protection system of the station,`` he added.

He said that the total of 20,000 tons of diesel received will be used at the power stations of Vassiliko, Moni and Dhekelia.

Invited by CNA to comment on statements by the so-called minister of energy in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus that an agreement has been achieved to provide power for another six months to the government-controlled areas, Tsouloftas said that some consultations took place, but there was no agreement so far.
