    President of the Greek Republic, Karolos Papoulias, Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel reaffirmed their support to the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    According to a press statement issued here today, Papoulias, Papandreou and Merkel contacted President Christofias in order to wish him for his 65th birthday on Monday.

    President Papoulias and Premier Papandreou reaffirmed that Athens fully supports President Christofias in his efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, adding that the firm cooperation between Greece and Cyprus will continue.

    President Christofias on his part expressed the gratitude of the Cyprus people and his government for Greeces support.

    Chancellor Merkel in a note to President Christofias expressed her confidence that he will approach the issue of reunification of Cyprus and EU presidency with determination and acuity.

    She also noted that throughout his political career, especially as President of Cyprus Republic, he served his country in the best possible way.

    Chancellor Merkel referred to her visit to Cyprus at the beginning of 2011 and she described the talks she had with President Christofias as pleasant, confidential and fruitful.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities, President Christofias and Dervis Eroglu, are currently engaged in UN-led talks, with an aim to reunify the island.

    Cyprus which joined the European Union in May 2004 will assume EU Presidency the second half of 2012.

    [02] ELECTRICITY COST RISE

    Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) approved Wednesday an extraordinary increase of 6.96% (before introduction of VAT) to the final bill of all consumers of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).

    Head of CERA Giorgos Shammas, announced in a press conference that the increase in electricity costs will begin to be recorded by the end of September 2011.According to Shammas, the price rise will apply for ten consecutive months.

    Meanwhile, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that the Cabinet decided that the Government will allocate 49 million euros to cover the cost of renting temporary power plants for a year, so that EAC will not pass all its increased costs to the consumers.

    He added that the Cabinet has authorized the Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau, to include this amount in his application for economic assistance from the EU funds.

    [03] CABINET - DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF - NATIONAL GUARD

    Cabinet appointed Wednesday Andreas Petrides, as new Deputy Chief of Staff of National Guard, in replacement of Savvas Argyrou whose service was terminated following last months massive munitions explosion, at a naval base in Mari.

    Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou announced that Major General Andreas Petrides service will be for a duration of two years.

    Stephanou said that according to the National Guard law, the Cabinet had to select between two high ranking officers and he explained that Major General Petrides was finally appointed because of his seniority.
