  • [01] INQUIRY COMMISSION - MARI - PRESIDENT

Head of the Commission of Inquiry on the deadly explosion at a naval base last July delivers Monday his report to the President of the Republic, the House President and the Attorney General.

Polis Polyviou, head of the Commission, handed the voluminous report early Monday morning to President Demetris Christofias.

``This is hard work. Everything will be done as it has been decided,`` the President told Polyviou and he received the report.

Later on he will hold a press conference to publicise it.

The Commission concluded its public hearings on September 16, after taking the testimonies of at least 33 persons, including the President himself, the former Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministers.

Meanwhile, Chief of Police Michalis Papageorgiou has said that on Tuesday he will give to the Attorney General Petros Clerides the police report into their own separate investigations concerning the deadly blast.

The police report contains 31 files with more than written 600 testimonies.

Following the blast at the naval base ``Evangelos Florakis`` at Mari, on July 11, the government appointed a Commission of Inquiry, headed by lawyer Polis Polyviou, to investigate the circumstances that led to the massive explosion of munitions, which killed 13 people, injured dozens and crippled the islands main power station. The Commission was instructed to look into possible political responsibilities.

The blast occurred in containers full of munitions, which Cyprus stored at the naval base, after confiscating the load from Monchegorsk, a vessel sailing from Iran to Syria in 2009. Cyprus was acting according to UN Security Council resolutions, imposing sanctions on Teheran.
