The Cyprus September inflation rate decreased to 2.4% compared with 2.9% in August and 3.5% in September 2010, figures released today by Cyprus` Statistical Service show.

According to CyStat, this is mainly attributed to increases in the prices of certain clothing and footwear items, electricity, certain fresh fruit, items of jewellery and tuition fees of private educational institutions and part-time education coaching centres. Decreases have been recorded in the prices of airfares and petroleum products.

The rate of increase of the Index, and therefore the rate of inflation for September 2011 dropped to 2.4% compared to 2.9% in August 2011 and 3.5% in September 2010.

Ways to further promote cooperation between Cyprus and Israel in the field of health, were examined during a meeting Thursday between Health Minister Dr. Stavros Malas and Israels Ambassador to Cyprus Micahel Harari.

In statements after the meeting, Dr. Malas said that the relations of the two countries in all fields are excellent, noting that the aim is to continually upgrade them, in the framework of a strategic plan.

He also said that in mid November, the minister will pay an official visit to Israel, to examine with his Israeli counterpart ways to cooperate in the field of research and medical care, with the prospect of Israeli universities and institutes to use Cyprus to create infrastructure.

Cyprus wants to investigate the possibility of transferring specialized activities from Israel to the island, said Dr. Malas, noting that Israel is a unique country in the field of innovation. Cyprus, he added, could be an important gate of activities for Israel in Europe.

On his part, Harari expressed hope that both countries relations will continue to strengthen in all fields.

An anti-pollution exercise, named NIRIIS 2011, was fulfilled successfully on Thursday. It was organized by the Ministry of Communications and Works in cooperation with the European Maritime Safety Agency aiming to examine the national capability of the Republic of Cyprus to mobilize its anti-pollution resources, respond to a major oil spill and also to test the communication and emergency response mechanism.

It was the first anti-pollution exercise in Cyprus, which took place with the participation of sea vessels and aircrafts of the Republic of Cyprus and the anti-pollution vessel Alexandria, chartered by the European Maritime Security Authority (EMSA).

The exercise was conducted according to an imaginary scenario involving an oil spill. The scenario involved a Cyprus-bound tanker suffering serious structural damage. A tank containing about 1,800 tons of oil is damaged, immediately beginning to release heavy fuel oil only 22 nautical miles away from Limassol port.

The response was two-fold: notifying all relevant authorities and collecting the spilled oil. The notification exercise involved response teams, the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism and operators of shore installations including naval bases, power stations and water desalination units.
