During the meeting of the heads of state and government of the European Union member states discussion will focus on decisions pertaining to the future of the euro area, notably efforts to stop further deepening of the crisis and to stabilise the market situation as well as a new methodology for managing the common currency.

Under discussion at the meeting will be a package of measures in response to the crisis, including the recapitalisation of banks and the strengthening of the European Financial Stability Facility.

The Polish Presidency emphasises that the key issue is for decisions essential for the entire European economy to be made within the group of all the European Union states.

After the European Council meeting, a meeting of euro area states is planned, to discuss about the Greek debt crisis.

[02] DEFENCE MINISTER - ARMY

Addressing a ceremony awarding the Green Beret to the new army recruits at the Stelios Mavrommatis Military Camp at Stavrovouni of Larnaca District, Minister Eliades congratulated the new recruits, noting that by entering the Special Forces unit voluntarily, they contribute to the country. Our island needs young men like you, who are responsible, dynamic, disciplined and have a military conscience.

Their continued training, discipline and readiness as well as high moral standards constitute the fundamental ingredients to strengthen the Special Forces operation and defence capabilities, he added.

Our aim is to make the National Guard a modern, flexible army of European standards, capable of effectively handling the challenges of the times and to defend the freedom of the country and dignity of the people as a credible, deterring and well trained force, he said.

[03] EAC CHAIRMAN - VIABILITY

Speaking to CNA, Thrasou said that is insurance companies do not cover the damages from the blast, the Authority will claim compensation from elsewhere. He did not however specify where the EAC will apply.

Thrasou pointed out that EAC is currently facing liquidity problems, until it begins operating normally by 2013, provided the insurance companies cover the damages at Vasiliko. If the insurance companies do not cover the damages, then we will have a real problem, he said.

Asked whether the Authority would face viability problems, Thrasou said that if the insurance companies won`t pay compensation, the EAC will claim compensation from elsewhere after consulting its legal advisers.

[04] EUROPEANS - TRADE UNIONS

According to a trade union press release, speaking during a meeting in Brussels with representatives from the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) and Revolutionary Trade Unions Federation (DEV-IS), who visited the Belgian capital from October 18 to 21, Schulz said their cooperation proves that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can live together, and expressed full support to efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

The trade unionists also met with Chairman of the Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left Lothar Bisky, who expressed support to efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. Furthermore, Vice Chairwoman of the Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left Ilda Figueiredo expressed support to the struggles of the trade union movement in Cyprus.

During a meeting with Cypriot Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou, the trade unionists raised the issue of enhancing actions that would strengthen rapprochement between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Vassiliou expressed readiness to assist, despite the fact that the issues raised were not within her competencies.
