[01] Chariot permitted to leave Limassol portThe cargo ship Chariot was given permission for refueling and departure from the port of Limassol once its shipowners decided to change its destination, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release states.The authorities had decided to prevent the refueling and departure of the ship from its Limassol anchorage when upon inspection it was concluded that the ship carried dangerous cargo with destination to Syria and Turkey. The Chariot, which carries the flag of St. Vincent and The Grenadines and is owned by Russian company Westberg Ltd (St. Petersburg, Russia), had anchored at Limassol port for refueling after it was obliged to seek refuge and fuel due to bad weather conditions. The Customs and Ports Authorities of the Republic of Cyprus carried out the procedures as dictated by the law and examined the documents of the ship and the cargo and carried out external checks of the four containers and of the electric generator on board. According to the press release actual examination of the content of the containers was not possible due to the narrow confines of the ship, however, it was concluded that the ship carried dangerous cargo with destination to Syria and Turkey. The relevant authorities prevented the refuelling and departure of the ship from its Limassol anchorage until the situation was clarified, the press release notes, adding that following coordinated efforts by the relevant authorities, the owners of the aforementioned ship decided to change the destination of the cargo. Moreover, the Regulations and Decisions of the Council of the European Union relevant to the restrictions concerning the situation in Syria, were taken into account and it was concluded that the relevant European Union restrictions are not being violated. As a result, the necessary procedures were put in place and permission was granted for the refuelling and departure of the ship, the Ministry states. [02] Defence Minister: Cyprus` EU Presidency to be objectiveTrying to promote national policies during Cyprus EU Presidency the second half of 2012, rather than the interests of the EU, would be detrimental , Defence Minister Demetris Eliades said on Wednesday, stressing that when exercising the Presidency, we represent the European Union and we shouldn`t pursue our national objectives.Speaking at a seminar for the Cyprus Presidency of the European Council, organized by the Ministry of Defence in Nicosia, Eliades described the Cyprus Presidency as the biggest challenge for our country, adding that we will sit for an exam and we ought to prove that we are a member state that is capable of dealing with all the responsibilities and demands put before us. He went on to say that the fact that Cyprus is a small country and might not have the experienced personnel and the technocrats that other member states have, should not be seen as a burden. Nothing should come in our way in order to work in a serious, responsible, objective and diligent manner and to promote the interests of the EU constructively. [03] Cyprus has taken effective measures to counter its deficitCyprus, Belgium, Malta and Poland have taken effective measures to keep their deadlines for the correction of their excessive deficits, the European Commission has decided following a proposal put forward by European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn.The European Commission notes that as a result no further steps are needed for the excessive deficit procedure, adding however that it will continue to monitor fiscal developments. In contrast, the steps taken by Hungary are judged to be insufficient and do not lead to a viable correction of its excessive deficit, so the Commission has decided that the procedure of excessive deficit will have to proceed to the next stage. Rehn is due to give a press conference as regards the decisions taken by the EU Commission later on Wednesday. [04] Norway continues to support Cyprus` sovereigntyNorway continues to support the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, and sincerely hopes that it will be possible to find a solution in the not too distant future that will end the separation of the communities in Cyprus, the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway, stationed in Athens, Sjur Larsen said on Wednesday, presenting his credentials to President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias.Receiving the credentials, President Christofias said that to solve the Cyprus problem all sides must show and act with the necessary goodwill, and assured that the Greek Cypriot side will continue to submit realistic and reasonable proposals, in good faith. He also said that Cyprus would be interested in expanding cooperation with the Kingdom of Norway, which has valuable expertise on resource and revenue management, in the field of hydrocarbon resources, in view of Cypruss current exploration of its potential reserves within its Exclusive Economic Zone. Presenting his credentials, Larsen said membership of the EU has brought the Republic of Cyprus into the very core of European cooperation, and said Norway was looking forward to working together with the Republic of Cyprus during Cyprus` coming Presidency of the EU.
