  • [01] Community leaders to discuss property issue

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, hold a new meeting today in the context of the UN-led direct talks to solve Cyprus problem.

The meeting takes place at the Chief of Mission`s residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

In statements Monday after a meeting with President Christofias, Special Advisor of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that the two leaders will be focusing on the issue of property during their next two meetings.

[02] Foreign Ministry calls for urgent restoration of Apostolos Andreas

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has underlined the need to restore the derelict Monastery of Apostolos Andreas in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

In a statement on Monday, the Foreign Ministry notes that Minister Erato Kozakou – Markoullis, was informed by Bishop of Karpasia Christoforos on the critical situation of the historic monastery and the urgent need to restore it”, adding that “an effort is underway to restore the monastery through the Technical Cultural Heritage Committee”.

The Foreign Ministry, the statement adds, “agrees with the appeal of the Archbishopric urging the public not to visit the Monastery until at least supports are added to the sections which are facing immediate danger, since the number one priority should be the safety of pilgrims”.

On Monday, Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II said he would be reporting the obstruction by the Turkish occupation regime of the maintenance of St. Andrew`s Monastery, and has called on the regime for the last time to allow restoration work, otherwise the Archbishopric would go ahead anyway at the risk of arrest.

[03] Cyprus-Bulgarian trade unions sign agreement

Cyprus Workers’ Confederation (SEK) signed on Monday an agreement with Bulgarian trade unions CITUB and PODKREPA, with an aim to assist Bulgarians working in Cyprus.

SEK Secretary-General Nikos Moiseos said that that the agreement comes at a time of economic development in Europe, owing to the coexistence and labor of millions of immigrants of various ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Moiseos noted the dangers of racist and xenophobic manifestations, targeting immigrants and workers of ethnic minorities and called on a common struggle against all discriminations that undermine the swift integration of immigrants in local societies.

The agreement between SEK and its Bulgarian counterparts aims at preventing such undesirable behavior from the part of the employers and strengthen employee rights, he said.
