  • [01] House President calls for alternative plan on Cyprus problem

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has called for an alternative strategy on the Cyprus issue, if talks for a solution to the division of the island fail.

Omirou, who has completed his contacts in London on Monday with a meeting with Speaker of the House of Common John Bercow, said he briefed his British counterpart on recent developments in Cyprus after the Greentre meeting.

He referred to the escalation of Turkish intransigence, adding that an international conference can only be convened if there is a solution to the international aspects of the Cyprus problem.

Bercow expressed the hope that a solution will be achieved for the sake of peace and justice.

Omirou also met with the General Secretary of the Labour Party Iain McNicol and Emma Reynolds, shadow minister for European Affairs, and informed them about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the remarks of former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. The two said Straw’s remarks represent Straw himself and not the Labour Party.

[02] Minister: Integration of immigrants, a priority for Cyprus` EU presidency

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said that the integration of immigrants in their host societies constitutes one of the key priorities of the Cypriot presidency of the EU Council of Ministers, which begins in July.

``The importance that Cyprus and the EU as a whole attach to integrating immigrants into their host societies is reflected in the Cypriot EU Presidency, since this is one of our main priorities,`` Sylikiotis said during a press conference on ``Activities encouraging mutual interaction and multicultural events``.

In this context, he continued, an EU Ministerial meeting will take place in Nicosia to discuss the integration of immigrants.

The Minister said that Cyprus after its accession to the EU, in May 2004, is faced with mass migratory pressures.

He said that the main objective is ``to have a policy framework that would incorporate measurable, and qualitative evaluation criteria in the field of employment, education, social inclusion and active citizenship.``
