  • [01] Leaders to continue direct talks on Thursday

    The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, will hold a new meeting on Thursday in the context of the UN-led direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

    The meeting, scheduled to start at 1000, will take place at the Chief of Mission`s residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

    The previous meeting between the leaders of the two communities took place on February 28 and in statements to the press Special Advisor of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that the two leaders focused their discussion once more on the issue of property.

    He added that they would continue their discussion on the issue of property in their next meeting.

    Leaders were due to meet on March 8, however that meeting was cancelled and their aides met instead.

    [02] UNSG will continue efforts for a Cyprus settlement

    UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has assured that he will continue his efforts for a settlement to the Cyprus problem.

    Ban received on Wednesday Cyprus Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Minas Hadjimichael who bid him farewell as the Cypriot Ambassador is leaving New York to assume on April 1st his post as the new Ambassador of Cyprus in Berlin.

    Hadjimichael conveyed to the Secretary General Cyprus President Demetris Christofas’ greetings and thanked him for his ongoing efforts on the Cyprus problem, as well as his personal involvement in efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem. Ban and Hadjimichael reviewed the situation as regards the Cyprus problem and discussed latest developments, as well as prospects lying ahead. They also discussed the content of Secretary General’s latest report on Cyprus.

    [03] Foreign Minister visits Lebanon

    Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis will be departing for Lebanon on Thursday for a two-day official visit, to discuss mainly the further promotion of bilateral relations, especially in the light of recent developments concerning the discovery of hydrocarbon deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean.

    Markoullis will meet with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, President of the Parliament Nabih Berri and Minister of Foreign Affairs Adnan Mansour.

    Other issues on the agenda are the political situation in the broader region of the Middle East, developments in Syria, Iran, Egypt and Libya, the Cyprus issue, and the priorities of Cyprus` EU presidency.

    [04] Government welcomes Triple Five investment plans for Cyprus

    Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias expressed his satisfaction over the intention of Triple Five (555) Group to invest in Cyprus, noting the stated confidence of “people with money” who trust Cyprus amid difficult times.

    The statements were made following the meeting of Triple Five Group Chairman Nader Ghermezian with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Kikis Kazamias, here on Wednesday, who stated that ``Cyprus is one of the best countries in the world today to invest in``.

    The Minister announced that a team of the Group’s experts is due to arrive next week in Cyprus, to conclude negotiations with Cypriot hoteliers over the accommodation of 80-100 thousand tourists, to arrive by the end of this year.
