  • [01] UK: Cyprus` government has not rejected federation concept

British Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Lord Howell has said that the British government is not aware of any occasion where the Government of the Republic of Cyprus has rejected the concept of a bizonal bicommunal solution, since this was agreed.

He said that the bizonal, bicommunal solution to the Cyprus problem was agreed within the 12 February 1977 high level agreement between the then leaders of the two communities, under the auspices of the UN Secretary General.

The statement is included in a written answer to Lord Maginis, who had asked on how many occasions the Government of the Republic of Cyprus has since 1974 rejected a bizonal, bicommunal solution to the Cyprus problem.

Ultimately, Lord Howell added, it is for the Cypriot people to decide whether to accept the terms of the settlement that the leaders agree within the bizonal, bicommunal framework.

[02] United States support Cyprus negotiations

The United States support the negotiations, under the auspices of the UN Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission, to reach a settlement reunifying Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federation, Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon has said.

Gordon was speaking after a meeting with Kudret Ozersay, advisor to Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

The meeting was part of regular consultations that the State Department conducts with all parties in the Cyprus talks, he added.

[03] Markoullis holds talks with Juppe in Paris

The Cyprus problem, hydrocarbon exploration within the Cypriot EEZ, the Cypriot EU Presidency and bilateral relations were the main issues that Cypriot FM Erato Kozakou Markoullis discussed with French counterpart Alain Juppe in Paris.

According to an official press release, Markoullis briefed French FM on the recent developments in the Cyprus problem, underlining the constructive approach of President Demetris Christofias as well as the fact that the Turkish Cypriot side present proposals cancel convergences in essential chapters of the Cyprus problem, previously achieved.

Cypriot FM reiterated at the same time the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to a solution on the basis of a single state compatible with international law and European acquis.

Alain Juppe reiterated the firm position of France for a Cyprus solution on the basis of the international and European law and the UN resolutions. He also expressed France’s readiness to contribute to the success of the Cypriot EU Presidency during the second semester of the year.

[04] Empowering civil society very important

Empowering civil society is of paramount significance for the government and the Cypriot EU Council rotating presidency due at the second half of 2012, Deputy Minister for EU Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis has said.

Mavroyiannis, who was addressing about 60 NGOs from both communities in an event regarding civil society participation in the Cypriot EU presidency in Nicosia, said that “your presence here is very important”.

“It is of paramount significance to empower civil society for the government” he noted.

“Holding the presidency of the Council of EU for the first time will be a unique experience for the Cypriot society”, he said, adding that “t is important to power civil society’s voice”.
