Electricity Authority of Cyprus Spokesman Costas Gavrielides said that at 0445 local time one of the power units at the Dhekelia power station stopped functioning, followed by a fault at steam unit at Moni power plant, leading to the collapse of the entire power supply system.

He said that only one unit at Moni and two at Dhekelia are now operating, but the main problem is synchronizing the units in operation.

Earlier, Director of Transmission System Operator (TSO) Christos Christodoulides told CNA that the fault in the power supply was enormous and efforts are underway to repair it.

Cyprus' main power plant at Vassiliko was destroyed when a blast occurred on July 11th, 2011, in containers, full of munitions, which Cyprus had confiscated from ``Monchegorsk``, a vessel sailing from Iran to Syria in 2009. Nicosia was acting in accordance with UN sanctions against Teheran.

As a result the island suffered regular electricity shortages until the situation was temporarily resolved via the rental of generator units from Greece, America and Israel as well as the provision of electricity from the occupied areas of the island.

Electricity production was increased when generators from abroad started arriving beginning of August.
