  • [01] Ésraeli FM holds talks with government Tuesday

The joint exploitation of the hydrocarbon reserves will be the subject of discussion during the talks of the Foreign Minister of Israel Avigdor Liberman in Cyprus, said here Monday Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou.

In statements on the occasion of Liberman's arrival on the island this morning and the start of his talks on Tuesday, Stephanou said that the visit is part of the rapid development of relations between the two countries in various fields, especially energy.

He also said that there are also other issues on the agenda such as economic cooperation something which the two countries have been discussing for long, and cited the visit of President Demetris Christofias to Israel last year where discussions were held on economic, commercial and political issues.

"All issues that pertain to the proximity of the two countries and their will to develop this cooperation", he added.

Asked if the construction of a terminal is part of the discussions, he said it was part of the overall energy issue.

To a question if high on the agenda of the talks is the joint exploitation of the hydrocarbon reserves, Stephanou replied in the affirmative.

"It is on the agenda, and as we have said before, based on international law, the law of the sea provides for certain procedures on these issues that have to do with common reserves and in general cooperation between neighbouring countries on these matters", he added.

[02] Turkish `Plan B` violates UN resolutions, Spokesman stresses

Cypriot Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that Plan B for a solution to the Cyprus issue which Ankara is advertising is against international law and violates UN resolutions.

Stephanou made the remark, invited to comment on a report in the Turkish "Millyet" newspaper that Turkey plans to implement a Plan B on Cyprus if by the 1st of July, when Cyprus will assume the EU rotating Presidency, there is no Cyprus settlement.

At the same time, the Spokesman rejected that July 1st is a deadline, reminding that President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has repeatedly expressed his readiness to continue the negotiations after July.

"Turkey is advertising a Plan B and is promoting it, something which the international community must see. The plan is against international law, the UN decisions on Cyprus and the Cyprus issue as well as the EU's decisions and positions, where Turkey aspires to join", Stephanou noted.

[03] Spokesman: German freighter heading to Turkey

The Cyprus government is closely monitoring the course of a German-owned freighter reportedly loaded with ammunition and heading to Syria. The freighter was reportedly sailing off the shores of Cyprus but according to latest reports, it is now heading to Turkey.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou told reporters on Monday that the freighter was heading north, towards Turkey.

He also said that there has been no communication of the Cypriot authorities with the ship, nor any request was made to the Republic of Cyprus.

Stephanou said there are no reports that the ship's last port of call was at Port Said. "I have no such information; these matters are being dealt by the relevant authorities and mainly the Department of Commercial Shipping", he added.
