  • [01] Agreement expected on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund

Negotiations in the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) concerning the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) reform package have entered a final stage, as the Council is expected to reach an agreement on the package's third element; the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) 2014- 2020.

The AGRIFISH Council meeting, which will take place on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 of October in Luxembourg, will focus on the EMFF and will strive to reach a partial general approach.

According to a press release issued by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Sophocles Aletraris, who will be chairing the AGRIFISH Council meeting stated: "The new fund will help deliver the ambitious objectives of the reform of the CFP and of Europe 2020. Decisions have to be taken as soon as possible in order to facilitate immediate implementation when the fund will come in effect in 2014. An agreement by the Council on the fisheries part of the EMFF means that the Council will be ready to discuss with the European Parliament the CFP package in its entirety"

[02] CSR can do its part in restoring trust for business, MEP says

At a time of harsh austerity, with people watching their salaries and pensions slashed or even worse weary of losing their jobs, Corporate Social Responsibility - most commonly known as CSR - could help restore trust for business in big companies necessary for economic recovery, British MEP Richard Howitt, and rapporteur to the European Parliament on CSR says.

At the backdrop of Europe`s sovereign debt crisis, some EU member-states shouldering a huge burden of recapitalizing their banking sector embarked on harsh austerity measures, resulting in salary cuts and pension reduction prompting people to question the soundness of the decision-making of CEO`s and Board of Directors particularly of big banks.

"We want people to invest their money and at the moment there is a lack of confidence, we want people to invest in business ideas particularly around environmental technology and services or around new socially useful business and in a climate where people are very fearful that is a difficult thing to do. So yes I agree CSR can be part of helping to restore confidence and I would argue it is a central part of having an economic recovery. People say we don`t just want a recovery, we want a sustainable economic recovery and you can`t have a sustainable economic recovery without sustainability," Rirchard Howitt said in an interview with CNA.

[03] President calls for further EU support to the Cyprus Presidency

The current period is particularly difficult for the European Union, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias stressed Friday in Brussels, urging the EU and the EU leaders to continue supporting the work of the Cyprus EU Presidency, making the additional step required for the successful completion of certain legislative dossiers, which are of great importance for the Union.

In an intervention at the European Council, President Christofias said that what Europe needs is to get back to growth and preserve its political credibility by responding to the markets and those who jeopardize the prosperity and social cohesion in Europe.

We need to give the message, he said, that the Union is progressing united, implementing what was agreed in the framework of the Pact for Growth and Jobs. As he stressed, there is an urgent need for the Council Presidency to work to promote important legislation and actions, in most cases, under the co-decision procedure with the European Parliament with a view to the earliest possible implementation of the decisions at the European Council which will significantly contribute to the creation of conditions for growth and employment in Europe.

[04] EU needs a holistic approach to promote children's well being

The EU needs a holistic approach to tackle child poverty and social exclusion and promote children's well-being, according to the conclusions reached during a two-day conference hosted by the Cyprus Ministry of Labour in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, titled "Investing in children: Preventing and tackling child poverty and social exclusion, promoting children's well-being.

Cyprus Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous said the conference revealed that currently there is a momentum at EU level that encourages adoption of further measures related to children's well-being.

Speaking at a Press conference held today in Nicosia, the Minister of Labour said that the conference reached the conclusion that "we need a holistic approach to address issues of children's well-being through a range of interventions involving children themselves as well as the environment which they live in".

[05] Communications Minister to attend Transport Systems World Congress

Communications and Works Minister Efthymios Flourentzou will address the 19th International Transport Systems World Congress to be held in Vienna, Austria October 22-26.

According to an official press release issued here, the Congress is organized by the European Commission and other private organizations. The Congress will be attended by Transport Ministers from various countries and high-level officials of international organizations.
