  • [01] European conference on combating violence against women opens

Despite the economic crisis, the EU must remain committed to promoting gender equality and eradicating violence against women, thus avoiding any step backwards, Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca has said.

Speaking at the opening of the European Conference on combating violence against women, taking place here in the framework of the Cyprus EU Presidency, Louca said, inter alia, the main aim of the conference is to review the progress made in recent years in Europe and to introduce good practices implemented in the areas of prevention, prosecution and protection of victims.

The Minister noted that women are the main victims of gender violence, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the most fundamental human right, noting that unfortunately, this is a widespread phenomenon in all modern societies.

[02] FinMin comments on EU Commission's economic forecast

The EU Commission's Autumn Economic Forecast for Cyprus after 2012 does not take into consideration the adoption of further measures, the Ministry of Finance has said.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the Ministry comments on the EU Commission Autumn Economic Forecast published on Wednesday, noting that it indicates that 2013 will be a difficult year for the Cyprus economy, with a gradual improvement expected in 2014 and 2015.

According to the ministry, the Commission estimates that Cyprus GDP will shrink by 2.3% in 2012 and by 1.7% in 2013.

[03] President: Agreements with the Ukraine proof of enhanced ties

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias indicated that the signing of eight Agreements in the areas of Taxation, Maritime Merchant Shipping, Aviation, Health, Agriculture, Investment and Sport between Cyprus and the Ukraine, as a follow-up to the five agreements on the Economy, Defence and Transport already signed, is tangible proof of the burgeoning ties between the two countries.

Speaking during the toast on the occasion of the state banquet in honour of the President of the Ukraine, Victor Yanukovych, who pays an official visit to the island, President Christofias expressed his satisfaction, particularly for the conclusion of the negotiations and the signing of the Convention for the Avoidance of Double Taxation, which, as he noted, implements the political commitment they assumed together with President Yanukovych, last year in Kiev.

"I am confident that the institutional framework we create will be adequately utilized for the benefit of our countries" he added, indicating that some of the initiatives undertaken in the past year, such as the opening of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation Office in Kiev and the Honorary Consulate in Odessa, as well as the implementation of the Pro-Visa for Ukrainians since last September, have already borne their positive results, with increased numbers of Ukrainian citizens visiting Cyprus. "It is expected that the anticipated introduction of further direct flights and extra routes will increase numbers even further" he added.

[04] Business summit explores prospects of Cyprus-Israeli cooperation

Increased prospects for cooperation between Israel and Cyprus following the discovery of natural gas reserves in the Exclusive Economic Zones of the two countries were discussed in the "Doing Business with Israel Summit", in the presence of Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoklis Sylikiotis and Uzi Landau Israel`s Minister of Energy and Water Resources.

"The energy sector is evolving at a rapid pace in our region and is expected to contribute greatly to the economic growth and the welfare of the countries involved," Sylikiotis said addressing the conference.

"Undoubtedly the strategic partnership between Israel and Cyprus could become the driving force for achieving these goals, building on the many synergies that such a partnership would entail," he said, adding that "on our part we firmly believe that we have a clear picture of the new prospects developing and are now carefully and consistently moving forward towards achieving our goals."
