  • [01] Last AGRIFISH under Cyprus Presidency agrees on fishing TACs

After long and difficult discussions and consultations, the Cyprus EU Presidency succeeded in the morning hours to achieve a unanimous agreement at the last Agriculture and Fisheries Council on fishing total allowable catches and quotas.

The EU Ministers reached a political agreement on total allowable catches and fishing effort limits for 2013 for the Atlantic, the North Sea, the international waters regulated by Regional Fisheries Maritime Organisations and for the fishing opportunities in the Black Sea.

The Council, chaired by Cypriot Minsiter for Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Sophocles Aletraris, also adopted a political agreement on the Presidency's proposal for the Cod Management Plan, which was closely linked to the internal total allowable catches and quotas.

[03] Cypriots express pessimism over economic situation in Cyprus and EU

The worsening of the situation of the economy is a matter that concerns Cypriots, who appear to be particularly pessimistic about the present and future of the island due to employment while eight in ten believe the country is going the wrong direction.

This was the main conclusion in the Autumn 2012 Standard Eurobarometer that was conducted through face-to-face interviews between 3 and 18 November 2012. A total of 32,731 people were interviewed across the 27 EU Member States and in the candidate countries.

The most pessimist Europeans are Greeks, followed by Spaniards, Cypriots and Portuguese. Specifically, 94% of Cypriots describe the economic situation in the country from bad to very bad while only six percent has a different opinion. Regarding the economic situation in the EU, 72% describe it as bad while 27% have a different opinion.

A total of 75% of Cypriots believe the situation will worsen in the next 12 months while only 6% predict an improvement.
