  • [01] Unemployment in Cyprus reaches 16.3% in May

    Unemployment in Cyprus reached 16.3% in May compared to 15.8% in April and it is amongst the countries with the highest increase.

    According to data released Monday by the Eurostat, the EU statistical service, the eurozone area unemployment rate was 12.1% in May 2013, up from 12.0% in April. The unemployment among the 27 EU members, was 10.9%, stable compared to the previous month.

    In both zones, rates have risen markedly compared with May 2012, when they were 11.3% and 10.4% respectively.

    [02] Education Minister announces results of 2013 Pancyprian examinations

    A total of 2,190 places for the higher and highest educational institutes of Cyprus and Greece's military and theatre schools, have been offered to Cypriot students for the academic year 2013-2014.

    The results of the 2013 Pancyprian examinations were announced Monday by the Minister of Education and Culture Kyriakos Kenevezos, who said that he was completely satisfied with the results and noted that the exams were carried out with transparency and secure procedures.

    Despina Papaioannou from Limassol ranked first, achieving the highest general grade of 20/20. She secured a place at the University of Cyprus Department of Accounting and Finance.

    [03] Foreign Ministry issues travel advice for Turkey

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advice for Turkey, calling on Cypriot citizens residing or visiting Turkey to avoid public places where gatherings occur in light of the tense situation prevailing in the country as a result of public demonstrations.

    Cypriot citizens, the official press release says, "are encouraged to keep abreast of local and international media coverage (especially the Internet) of events and to follow the instructions of the Authorities".

    "Following recent demonstrations which have spread in many regions in Turkey, it is not possible to guarantee that the current situation will not affect the safety of Cypriot citizens visiting the country," it adds.
