  • [01] UNSG Special Representative hopes Cyprus talks will begin this Autumn

Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim has expressed hope that the direct talks between the two communities on the island will begin this Autumn, adding that both sides are getting prepared.

Buttenheim on Monday briefed the members of the UN Security Council about the recent draft report on the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the current developments on the Cyprus problem.

Speaking to the press, Buttenheim described the meeting and the comments by the various members of the Security Council as constructive meeting.

[02] House President: We will not yield due to financial difficulties

House President Yiannakis Omirou has said that those who want to use the financial crisis in Cyprus to impose an unjust and unbalanced for the Greek Cypriots settlement to the Cyprus problem must not have illusions, assuring that "we will not yield due to the financial difficulties."

Addressing an event on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the Greek coup d' etat in Cyprus, on July 15, 1974, that was followed by the Turkish invasion of the island five days later, Omirou said that despite the absence of solidarity by its EU partners, Cyprus will manage to recover its economy.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Omirou said that the UN General Secretariat's consent to suspend the resumption of the negotiations due to the financial crisis, must not lead to complacency.

[03] Defence Minister: Our sovereignty cannot be sold out

The Cyprus issue was and will remain the government`s top priority, Minister of Defence Photis Photiou said on Monday, noting that "sovereignty cannot be sold out at negotiating tables, our statehood remains intact and undamaged, and no extortion will ever be so powerful as to impel us to accept an undignified and fragile solution."

In a speech at the memorial service for those who died during the 1974 military coup, held in Nicosia, Photiou said President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades seeks, through the National Council, to draft a common strategy in view of the resumption of talks for a Cyprus settlement.

Photiou said that the continuing Turkish occupation and division have no place on the EU map, noting that "Cyprus should be the exception to the rule and cannot remain the only divided and semi-occupied country of Europe for much longer."

[04] Greek and Cypriot Foreign Ministers hold a meeting in Athens

The Cyprus issue, energy, economy and EU affairs, were on the agenda of a meeting held Monday in Athens between the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Cyprus, Evaggelos Venizelos and Ioannis Kasoulides.

The meeting took place just one week after Venizelos' visit to Cyprus on the 5th of July. "This", the Greek FM said, "underlines the willingness of both sides to have a constant contact for a dialogue on various issues concerning the foreign and European policy".

"We discussed the Cyprus issue, ahead of the forthcoming two-day meeting of the Cyprus National Council, (top advisory body of the Cypriot President as regards the Cyprus issue)", he said.

[05] Kasoulides: More Europe is the answer to economic and social integration

The European Union is today divided as it has never been before in its history, it seems that it has lost its orientation and the relations between the European citizens and the institutions in the EU are in doubt, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said.

Speaking at an event about the Future of the EU organized in Athens by the Greek MEP Marietta Yiannakou, the FM noted that the EU was established to bring economic union, however what we witness today is the fact that the EU itself does not have the means and tools to deal with the crisis in the eurozone. He also expressed the opinion that today`s problem derive from the fact that the EU tried to set up a monetary union before the economic union was achieved.

Kasoulides said that the economy which was the factor that brought together the EU has now become a dividing issue and its ‘Achilles` heel'.
