  • [01] EC approves proposal to amend the European Solidarity Fund

The European Commission approved on Thursday a proposal for a Regulation amending the European Solidarity Fund with a view to facilitate faster and simpler use of the Fund

The issue is now in the hands of the legislator - the European Parliament and the Council. The Commission has expressed hope to have the amended Regulation in place before the European elections in May 2014.

The European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) was set up to respond to major natural disasters and express European solidarity to disaster-stricken regions within Europe. The Fund was created in the wake of the severe floods in Central Europe in the summer of 2002. It grants financial aid to Member States and candidate countries (currently Turkey and Montenegro) affected by major natural disasters.

[02] Cyprus and China agree to promote defence agreement

Defence Minister Photis Photiou met Thursday with Chinese Ambassador Liu Xinsheng with whom he discussed defence and security issues, seeking ways to further promote and strengthen Cyprus-China relations.

In addition, Photiou and Xinsheng decided to promote as soon as possible a defence agreement and pledged to work intensively on that field.

They also emphasized that Cyprus and China share common values and that their relations have been upgraded, as an increase of Chinese citizens choosing Cyprus for investments or tourism, indicates.

[03] Middle-range prices with good offers in Cyprus for Britons

Cyprus` south eastern resort Ayia Napa ranks in the middle of a list produced by the UK Post Office as regards the cost of 12 holiday essentials this summer in ten of the most popular European resorts for Britons.

The yearly survey compares the prices of products and services such as sun cream, a three-course meal for a family of four, a glass of wine and a pedalo ride.

The total cost in Ayia Napa is £98.46, amounting to a 5.5% increase in comparison to the summer of 2012. Corfu with a respective cost of £99.91, Crete with £107.75, Bournemouth in England with £139.28 and Sorrento in Italy at £176.16 are the Britons' favourite destinations that are found to be more expensive than the Cypriot resort. In all these destinations prices have increased since last summer, with the exception of Crete. The Greek island has dropped its prices by 18.8%, more than any other rival destination.

[04] Justice Minister presents Complaints Commission for detention grounds

Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou presented the President and members of the Complaints Commission for the Menoyia detention grounds for illegal immigrants on Thursday, noting that the Commission was set up in context of the broader effort to modernise the state.

Nicolaou said he asked the President and members of the Commission "to be rigorous in the effort to safeguard human rights in our country, and to send the message to all international organisations that there is no racism here but sensitivity to all who arrive here and for any reason."

President of the Commission, which was set up by Nicolaou a few weeks ago, is Pantelis Panteli from the Mental Health Services of the Ministry of Health and Deputy Senior Special Psychologist. Members of the Commission are Riginos Polydefkis from the Civil Registry and Migration Department of the Ministry of the Interior and Eftyhios Hadjichristodoulou from the Social Services of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance.
