  • [01] Bank of Cyprus Annual General Meeting set for September 10

The Bank of Cyprus has announced that its Annual General Meeting will take place on September 10, at 16.00 hrs local time (13.00 GMT).

On the day a new Board of Directors will be elected and their fee will be determined, a Bank of Cyprus press release says.

Despite the fact that the review of the Bank's consolidated financial statements is included in the agenda, it will be proposed that they be reviewed at another extraordinary AGM which will take place no later than the end of November.

[02] Commission announces bluefin tuna fishing quota deduction for Cyprus

The European Commission announced, on Thursday, deductions from 2013 fishing quotas for member states, including 1,389 tons of bluefin tuna for Cyprus.

"This yearly deduction exercise allows the Commission to immediately address the damage done to the stocks over-fished in the previous year and ensure a sustainable use by Member States of common fishery resources", a European Commission press release says.

"As we now work towards the implementation of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy, our priority is to ensure that the rules are rigorously and fairly enforced for all", points out Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

[03] Cooperative Credit Institutions in Cyprus to merge

The Cooperative Central Bank of Cyprus released on Thursday a list of the new 18 Cooperative Credit Institutions to be established on the island, after the merger of 93 existing institutions.

According to a press release issued by the Cooperative Central Bank, during a meeting earlier today representatives of all Cooperative Credit Institutions, which are members of the Cooperative Central Bank, were informed about the restructuring strategy agreed during the recent deliberations of the Troika with the Republic of Cyprus competent authorities, on the basis of which a Restructuring Plan will be drafted.

Particular emphasis was given to the immediate implementation of the Plan's provisions regarding the merger of the 93 existing institutions and the establishment of 18 new companies.

[04] Minister: Efforts focus on a growing Cyprus shipping industry

Government efforts focus on a continuously growing and prosperous Cyprus shipping and a maritime industry unparalleled by others, Communications and Works Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos said on Thursday, noting that the government upholds shipping as one of its "best kept secrets", a secret that supports the local economy quietly, efficiently, effectively and sustainably.

In his address at the signing ceremony of a contract for the building eco-friendly bulk carrier vessels by FrontMarine and Lemissoler Navigation, he said that " when these vessels are put in service, hopefully under the Cyprus flag, they will contribute to the efforts of our Government, and many others around the world, for the development and expansion of a sustainable maritime transport system."

Such a system, he noted, will provide efficient and effective sea transport, contribute to the reduction of harmful substances in the environment, reduce emissions of various oxides that have proven to shorten the life of people living around busy ports and last but not least, help alleviate the major environmental problem faced by the planet today, that of climate change and global warming.

[05] CIPA urges Cypriot diplomats to promote investment opportunities

Cypriot ambassadors, based overseas, have expressed their readiness to contribute to efforts to revert the negative climate created after the recent developments regarding the island's economy.

The pledge was made during a meeting of the ambassadors with the leadership of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA), according to a statement.

CIPA chairman Christodoulos Angastiniotis said the meeting took place in the framework of efforts to restore Cyprus' image as a credible investment destination, urging the ambassadors to inform foreign business people and investors about the advantages that Cyprus continues to have.
