    Cyprus is actively pursuing an Open Skies Policy, Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos said on Monday.

    He added that after a relevant agreement with Ukraine, Nicosia was making efforts to start the dialogue on the matter with Russia, while exploring the possibility of establishing flights with countries from Central Asia as well. One such country could be Kazakhstan, the Minister said.

    In his statements, at the Ministry, Mitsopoulos said that the agreement with Ukraine - a major tourism partner for Cyprus - is in effect all year round. He added that the Russian side has already been contacted as well, in order to commence a similar dialogue with Moscow, however there has been no response yet.

    [02] UK and Cyprus record wage losses, according to study

    Wages in Great Britain are subject to one of the greatest reductions in the EU, during the recent financial crisis, according to data gathered by the library of the House of Commons, after a relevant request by the Labour Party.

    From mid-2010 until now, the hourly rate in the UK declined by 5.5%, taking inflation into account. The reduction is only greater in Greece (11.3%), in Portugal and the Netherlands.

    In Cyprus, the hourly rate has declined by 3%, according to the same data, while the decrease in Spain is 3.3%. In contrast, rates went up by 2.7% in Germany and 0.4% in France, during the same three-year period.

    [03] Ongoing development-oriented projects not to be affected, Minister says

    There is an effort not to affect ongoing development-oriented projects in the 2014 state budget, Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos said on Monday.

    He added that his Ministry is still in the process of preparing the budget. Mitsopoulos was responding to a question concerning the budget to be allocated for development-oriented projects.

    According to the Minister, the issue has not been finalized yet. The Ministry, he added, is in contact with the Finance Ministry in order to finalize the budget "through dialogue and a common approach".

    [04] Cyprus Airways restructuring plan goes on with consistency, according to Minister

    Cyprus Airways flights are nearing full capacity during high season, Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos said on Monday, noting in parallel that the company's restructuring plan is progressing "with consistency".

    Responding to a question, Mitsopoulos said that he was briefed last week by the company's Board Chairman, as well as by the Executive Director, and noted that "the restructuring plan is progressing, according to our briefing, with consistency and in a reliable manner".

    He said moreover that it was important to make a good impression on the European Commission, which has the final say on the plan.

    [05] Germany interested in shipping cooperation with Cyprus

    Germany is showing significant interest in shipping cooperation with Cyprus, Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos has said.

    In statements after a meeting with German Ambassador in Nicosia Gabriella Guellil, Mitsopoulos also said that Germany has shown an interest in helping Cyprus via the exchange of knowledge, expertise and experience as regards public works.

    The meeting, he noted, which was very interesting focused on bilateral relations.
