  • [01] Developments in Syria closely monitored says FM

The Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the developments in Syria, it said in a written statement, extending Cyprus' sympathy to the Syrian people.

Asked by the CNA about the situation in Syria the Ministry noted that it remains unsettled and pointed out that Cyprus is against further use of violence and escalation of tension. "The possible use of chemical weapons can only cause great concern for us, since such a development, in addition to the violation of the international law and the tragic impact on the Syrian people, it would also affect the entire region, including Cyprus", the Ministry underlined. T

he Ministry welcomed a mission of UN experts on chemical weapons to Syria, stressing that "the use of weapons of mass destruction is not without consequences and is unreservedly condemned". The team of experts, led by Swedish scientist Åke Sellström, is spending up to 14 days, with a possible extension, probing the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Government at Khan al-Asal, as well as two other allegations reported by Member States. The team is working in cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapon (OPCW) and the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

[02] Kouyialis holds series of meetings in Israel in framework of MïU

Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Enviroment, Nicos Kouyialis, held a series of meetings Monday in Israel in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this month between Cyprus, Greece and Israel in the areas of energy and water resources.

In statements to CNA, Kouyialis said he held a meeting with Israeli Minister for Energy and Water Resources Silvan Shalom and Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Yair Shamir. Referring to his meeting with Shalom, he said that they discussed issues relating to energy, energy efficiency of desalination, management of urban waste water and use of recycled water for agricultural purposes, security of infrastructure, such as dams and desalination, and other matters of concern to the two countries.

Kouyialis told CNA that the two countries are ready to work intensively for the implementation and further expansion of the MOU in other areas as well, such as tourism, environment, commerce and fisheries. As regards his meeting with the Israeli Minister of Agriculture, Kouyialis said they discussed about three fields of cooperation, in the area of agriculture, fisheries and agricultural research.
