  • [01] Cypriot parties call on community leaders to prepare the resumption of negotiations

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties have urged the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to prepare the resumption of direct negotiations and work intensively for a viable and comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Cyprus, Oksana Tomova has said.

Reading the joint communiqué after the meeting of the parties at Ledra Palace, in the UN controlled buffer zone, she said the leaders and the representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties met on Wednesday for their regular meeting and expressed opinions on the issue "Restarting of the negotiations - Possibilities for comprehensive solution" as proposed by the hosting party AKEL. They reassured their will for a solution of the Cyprus problem the soonest possible, she added.

"A solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, based on the UN resolutions and the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979, with political equality as described in the relevant UN resolutions".

[02] Government determined to complete public sector reform, says FinMin

Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades sent on Wednesday a message of determination on the part of the government to complete public sector reform despite obstacles.

Addressing a PWC event, which took place at the Ministry of Finance on the "Future of Government", Georgiades praised the public sector for its decisive contribution to the country's progress at crucial periods, such as the rebuilding of the economy after the 1974 Turkish invasion, the accession of Cyprus to the European Union and the eurozone and a successful EU Council Presidency at the second half of 2012.

He made it plain however that "this is a time of change and of modernization". There is a lot to be done in order for the Republic of Cyprus to be transformed to a modern European state in practice not just rhetoric he said, stressing that the effort must be a joint one. He pointed out that the government wishes for the private sector to be involved in the process and all those who, as he put it, express concern or reservations.
