    Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos said Friday that the top political priority and goal of his ministry is to continue designing, planning and implementing new projects, despite the economic woes in the island.

    Speaking during a presentation on the work of the Ministry in the first six months of President Nikos Anastasiades' governance, Hasikos pointed out the economic situation was extremely difficult last March when he assumed office, adding that "we received a state that was counting the hours before bankruptcy".

    "Our top political priority and our goal is to continue planning new projects, so we can proceed with their implementation, utilizing every financial opportunity that appears," said Hasikos.

    [02] Securities Commission imposes €460,000 fine over Bank of Cyprus Greek bond purchases

    Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySeC) imposed administrative fines totaling €460,000 on the Bank of Cyprus (BOC) and former BOC senior executives and board members for violating the law by not announcing significant Greek bond purchases to the Cyprus Stock Exchange.

    According to a press release issued by CySEC, the Bank of Cyprus as well Andreas Eliades the Banks CEO, Yiannis Kypri Executive Board member and four members of the Board, members of the Risk Management Committee for violating article 11(1)(a) of the Law 116 (I) of 2005 on two occasions as they failed to announce significant Greek bond purchases to the Stock Exchange on 13 January 2010 and 28 April 2010.

    CySec imposed administrative fines of €70,000 and €90,000 respectively to the bank, while it imposed fines €60.000 and €80,000 to Eliades, €50,000 and €70,000 to Kypri and €10,000 each for the four board members.

    [03] Number of unemployed exceeds 52.000 in September 2013

    The number of registered unemployed persons in Cyprus reached 52.112 persons in September 2013, marking an annual increase of 38.8% and an increase of 1.63% compared to previous month, according to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus.

    The unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of September 2013, reached 47.017 persons. Based on the seasonally adjusted data that shows the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for September 2013 increased to 52.112 persons in comparison to 51.275 in the previous month.

    In comparison with September 2012, an increase of 13.151 persons or 38,8% was recorded which was mainly observed in the sectors of trade (an increase of 2.515 unemployed persons), financial and insurance activities (an increase of 1.747), education (an increase of 1.742), construction (an increase of 1.264), manufacturing (an increase of 1.150), accommodation and food service activities (an increase of 614), as well as to newcomers in the labour market where an increase of 1.601 unemployed persons was recorded.
