[01] President receives Russian Ambassador
The Cyprus issue and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades' visit to Russia
were the focus of a meeting he had with Russian Ambassador Stanislav
Osadchiy, on Monday, at the Presidential Palace.
In statements he made to the press after the meeting Osadchiy noted
that that it was a scheduled visit with a view of discussing bilateral
relations and the Cyprus issue. We informed the President as to how we
intent to proceed in the next few days in preparation for his visit to
Russia and as regards our bilateral relations and the President briefed
us on the Cyprus issue, he noted.
Replying to a question as to a particular date for the visit has been
set he said that discussions on that are ongoing.
[02] House Speaker: Talks must lead to a solution
House President Yiannakis Omirou has said that during the resumption of
the Cyprus talks, there should be one basis for negotiations and the
outcome must be a solution which will secure the proper evolution of
the Republic of Cyprus into a federal state.
Addressing a meeting with a representation of foreign members of
Parliament and personalities who participated in the anti-occupation
events organised by the Morfou Municipality, Omirou further said that the
solution in Cyprus "should be based on UN Security Council resolutions,
the high level agreements of 1977 and 1970 and European and international
law, given that Cyprus is an EU member".
If talks end up being a dialogue of the deaf, they would herald another
failure and a deeper deadlock. "Now we want to have one basis for the
negotiations and the objective and the outcome should be a solution to the
Cyprus problem which will secure the proper evolution of the Republic of
Cyprus into a federal state", said Omirou, noting that this does not mean
"virgin birth." This federation, he added, should provide for the unity of
the state, the people, its institutions and economy and should safeguard
the rights and fundamental freedoms of all its lawful inhabitants.
