  • [01] Authorities introduce measures on Tax Transparency findings

Supervising Authorities of the Administrative Service Providers (ASP), namely the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Cyprus Bar Association and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus, and the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) agreed to initiate measures in order to tackle the findings of Global Forum on Tax Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes report on Cyprus.

According to an ASPs and IRD joint press release Cyprus has been rated by the Global Forum on Tax Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes, after a review of the legislation and practices followed on the exchange of information between tax authorities which apply in Cyprus, that it does not conform to the practices of tax information exchange within the time limits specified for such matters.

As noted the issue was discussed by the Competent Authorities of the Republic of Cyprus and the Supervisory Authorities and it has been decided to take concrete measures. In order to create a system of coordination between the IRD and the companies which are managed by the ASP regarding receiving and responding to queries from foreign tax authorities, as a first immediate step, it has been decided that each ASP indicates to the IRD a specific person who will act as the "liaison" between the ASP and the IRD for issues relating to responding and receiving information in connection with such requests.

[02] Eurocontrol official to visit Cyprus to discuss Civil Aviation Department`s restructuring

Eurocontrol Director Network Manager Joe Sultana arrives to Cyprus on December 19 to discuss ways of implementing the government's decision for restructuring the Civil Aviation Department which will become an independent state service.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades' adviser on air transport issues Christos Petrou told CNA that Sultana will visit Cyprus with a pre-determined agenda and will have a meeting that will be attended by representatives of the two trade unions of the Civil Aviation Department employees, representatives of the air traffic controllers association and members of the Civil Aviation Department management.

He added that this group will constitute the coordinating committee that will address the whole issue and will have regular meetings with a view to reconcile all views, while President Anastasiades and Communications Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos will be informed on the progress that will be achieved.

[03] USA working to assist efforts for resumption of talks, Ambassador says

The United States of America are working closely with all parties concerned in the Cyprus problem in order to assist the efforts to initiate negotiations, the US Ambassador in Cyprus John Koening has stated.

Speaking after a meeting with the President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Koening said "we discussed efforts to find a way forward in this important week to initiate negotiations which will seek to achieve on behalf of all the people of Cyprus a viable, just and lasting solution of the Cyprus problem and we are working closely with all parties concerned in order to do what we can as USA to assist these efforts".

He added that they also discussed the state of the Cypriot economy and the tremendous progress that has been made in overcoming some of the challenges that Cyprus is faced in the course of the last year, particularly since the adjustment programme was initiated between Cyprus and the Troika and some of the ways which the US can be in assistance.
