  • [01] Government satisfied with the agreement to restore monastery

Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou has expressed the satisfaction of the government with the agreement reached between the Development Program of the United Nations (UNDP) and the Church of Cyprus on the restoration of the historic Apostle Andreas Monastery in the Turkish occupied area of Karpasia.

According to an official announcement, Stephanou said that "this development is of great importance, since after many years of efforts, we now have an established institutional framework for the implementation of the project based on the agreed procedures and technical specifications and under the auspices of the United Nations."

"This framework constitutes the binding basis of the project implementation for everyone and puts things on a path of no return", he added.

[02] Recapitalization of Cyprus banks according to baseline scenario

The recapitalization of Cyprus banks should be done according to the baseline scenario of Pimco's due diligence and not the adverse scenario, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said. He further called on everybody to remain calm, ahead of Pimco's final report.

In statements to the Press, Stephanou noted that the government's position is well known and has been outlined in a recent letter handed by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

"We ask for the adoption of the baseline scenario for the recapitalization of the banks," Stephanou said. He added that in case the adverse scenario prevails, capital needs might be covered directly by the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), once the Single Supervisory Mechanism is in place.

[03] Cyprus to sign agreement with energy giant Total in a few days

Cyprus will sign in a few days an agreement with the French energy giant Total for an exploratory drilling in blocks 10 and 11 of its Exclusive Economic Zone, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Neoclis Sylikiotis said on Thursday.

Sylikiotis was commenting on a statement of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan who spoke about "unrealistic dreams of the Greek Cypriot administration" in the Mediterranean Sea.

"We will continue exercising our sovereign rights and exploiting our natural resources for the prosperity of Cypriots " Sylikiotis pointed out, underlining that Cyprus exercises its sovereign rights on the basis of the international law and is supported by the international community.

[04] Monastery will be restored according to the University of Patra study

Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has stated that the monastery of Apostle Andreas will be restored according to a study prepared by the University of Patra, and "nobody can intervene to that (study)".

Invited to comment on the signing of the agreement between UNDP and the Church of Cyprus for the restoration of the historic monastery in the Turkish occupied Karpas Peninsula, Archbishop Chrysostomos pointed out that since UNDP undertook the responsibility to call on for tenders, the study prepared by the University of Patra will be implemented. There can be no interference by the Turks to that", he added.

The UNDP officially announced the agreement on the restoration of the monastery of Apostle Andreas on Thursday.

[05] Cyprus and Palestine to enhance cooperation on energy matters

At a meeting they had in Nicosia, Sylikiotis briefed his Palestinian counterpart on Cyprus' efforts to explore and exploit its natural gas resources, as well as on the efforts made by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU to strengthen EU relations with countries of the region.
