  • [01] No proposal for losses on Cypriot banks' depositors, European Commission says

There is no European Commission proposal to force losses on uninsured depositors of Cypriot banks, a spokesman for Vice President Olli Rehn said on Monday.

The Commission spokesman, while commenting on a relevant Financial Times report, also said that he does not comment on scenarios that circulate around.

We work for a solution regarding the viability of the country's debt and the stability of the financial system, the spokesman concluded, noting that discussions are ongoing and developments are expected to be discussed in Monday's Eurogroup meeting.

[02] President Christofias to pay official visit to Greece

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias leaves Tuesday for Athens where he will pay his last official visit as President of the Republic, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.

In statements to the press, after a meeting of the Council of Ministers, Stephanou said that this is Christofias' last official visit abroad, recalling that his first official visit abroad after he assumed his duties as President was in Athens.

"The reason for that is well understood. Greek is our main supporter, we have an excellent cooperation with Greece at all levels and we believe that during the last five years these relations have been enhanced even more," he added.

[03] Cyprus Central Bank: Legal rights of depositors not to be affected

The Central Bank of Cyprus clarified Monday that legal rights of depositors in the Cypriot Banks will not be affected, either by imposing restrictions on withdrawals or transfers or otherwise.

The bank was commenting on a publication of the Financial Times, according to which "a radical new option for the financial rescue of Cyprus would force losses on uninsured depositors in Cypriot banks, as well as investors in the country's sovereign bonds, according to a confidential memorandum prepared ahead of Monday's meeting of eurozone finance ministers".

"There is no issue of affecting the legal rights of depositors, either by imposing restrictions on withdrawals or transfers or otherwise," Spokeswoman of Central Bank Aliki Stylianou told CNA.

[04] Cyprus to host conference of Speakers of EU Parliaments

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has stressed the need to remain focused on the primary goal of further strengthening the EU as a whole and on enhancing its credibility in the eyes of its citizens.

Omirou was addressing a meeting of Secretaries General of EU Parliaments that convened in Nicosia to finalize the programme and the agenda of the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments that will take place 21-23 April in the capital.

The April proceedings, he said, will be divided into three sessions and will concentrate on issues reflecting the priorities, which were set by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, aiming at generating a dialogue of direct interest to the European citizen.

[05] Final TV debate for 2013 Presidential Elections

The three main candidates for the 2013 Presidential Elections in Cyprus will set out their positions on home governance and the economy in their third and final TV debate to take place on Monday night.

President of the main opposition right wing party Democratic Rally (DISY) Nikos Anastasiades, who is backed by centre right Democratic Party DIKO, Stavros Malas, who will run having secured the backing of the ruling left wing party AKEL, and the independent candidate, former foreign minister, Giorgos Lillikas, who is backed by the socialist party EDEK and others, will outline their views in the televised debate which will be broadcast live on all four main TV channels.

The first round of Presidential elections will take place on February 17. If no candidate receives over 50% of the vote then a run off election will take place on February 24 between the first two candidates to ‘cross the line' at the first round.

[06] Eurogroup meeting to discuss Cyprus' bailout

A Eurogroup meeting takes place today in Brussels under newly elected Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem, which will discuss, among other issues, Cyprus' application for financial bailout.

Cyprus will be represented by Finance Minister Vasos Shiarly, who will be called upon to respond to allegations of money laundering in Cyprus. Some eurozone member states have asked for an investigation into those allegations by an independent organization.

Shiarly has repeatedly stated that the Cypriot Government does not object to a new investigation into Cyprus' system provided it is carried out by an internationally recognized organization with the necessary expertise.
