[02] Police and Election Service investigating video by "Anonymous
The Cyprus Police and the officials of the Election Services of the
Republic are thoroughly looking into a video that was uploaded on the
internet by hackers' group "Anonymous" against today's presidential
elections on the island. According to the video, the group "Anonymous"
threaten to hit the electronic systems of the Interior Ministry which
will transmit the elections results.
Chief Returning Officer Andreas Assiotis told the press that the systems
at the Interior Ministry are "armored" against an internet attack. He
added that the Election Services are in contact with the Police and the
IT Department of the Republic and all the necessary measures have been
taken in order for the procedure to run smoothly and the results to be
announced on schedule.
Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou told the press that all the relevant
information was given to the Chief Returning Officer, pointing out that
"the safety of the system is adequate enough and the possibility of
the group to intervene is minimal". He also stressed that should the
governmental services and police need the assistance of either Europol
or Interpol, there will be a contact with them.
