[01] Archbishop expresses support to Anastasiades` candidacy
Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos has expressed his support to
Presidential candidate, Democratic Rally leader, Nicos Anastasiades.
In statements after a meeting they had on Thursday, the Archbishop noted
that the country needs a strong government. "We will offer our support
to the new government and Mr. Anastasiades," the Primate of the Church
of Cyprus said, and wished him every success for the benefit of the
country and its people.
Responding to a question, the Archbishop said that the Church had to
express its position with regard to Sunday's elections as half of the
country's territory is under Turkish occupation and Cyprus faces serious
economic problems.
[02] Lebanese charged with terrorism to appear in court again on March 7
Proceedings continued on Thursday at the Assize Court in the case of
the 24-year-old Lebanese citizen, holder of a Swedish passport, who is
charged with espionage, participation in a terrorist organisation and
planning a terrorist attack against Israeli targets.
On Wednesday, the suspect denied any involvement in a terrorist
organisation and that, although he admitted to being a member of Hezbollah
for the past four years, he said he was acting as a member of a party
and did not support "fanatic Islam."
The prosecution had requested time to study his testimony in order
to begin his cross-examination, which started on Thursday. The court
decided that the hearing of the case will continue on March 7 and that
the suspect would remain in custody.
